Issue with Nominee Registration in Bank Account
1) My father had a savings and pension account in the State Bank of India. Since 2010, after his retirement, the Nominee Registration Number was mentioned on the first page of the passbook.
2) The new passbook was updated sometime in 2016 (exact date unknown), and it was found that the Nominee Registration Number was not mentioned.
Recently, my father passed away, and we went to the bank to claim/transfer his savings and pension to my mother's name. The bank informed us that the nominee was not registered after checking digitally, and we had to go through formalities in the presence of all family members, as one of my brothers is settled abroad with his family.
Query Regarding Nominee Registration
My query is: if the nomination was mentioned in the first passbook, why is it not in the digital records? The bank staff suggested that my father might have withdrawn from the nomination facility, but this is unlikely as my father, being a defense officer, was meticulous about paperwork. Every other account, including the Post Office savings, has the nominee name registered.
We have asked the bank staff to show the hard copy of the nomination or the nomination withdrawal form, but nobody has cooperated so far. The pension formalities for my mother are delayed without reason.
I am working out of the city and cannot stand in lines daily. Also, is nomination a one-time process, or do we have to update it periodically even if there is no change?

Hi, Nomination, once updated in the bank registers/system, is supposed to reflect in the new passbook as well. Anyhow, you should have obtained a legal heir certificate with which you can approach the bank. You may email your grievance to the banking ombudsman if need be.
