Hi sir, Good day! I am Satyanarayana. An employee has been given a weekly day off after every 6 consecutive working days. If a festival holiday falls on the weekly day off, we are marking it as a Public Holiday (PH) in the attendance rolls on the day off. Is it permissible to provide compensation in lieu of the weekly day off? Please provide clarification.

If the public holiday falls on weekly off day, then the public holiday is subsumed and there is no need for giving an additional holiday.

In most organizations, Paid Festival Holidays are determined by the organization, and where there is a Union, it is done in consultation with the Union. Usually, Paid Festival Holidays are scheduled to avoid coinciding with the weekly off. In some organizations, Paid Festival Holidays are determined by the NI Act. In such cases, if a Paid Festival Holiday falls on a weekly off day, no additional compensation is typically provided.
