Greetings to everybody on this platform. Not a query but let's discuss.
Companies give a variety of benefits to employees to ensure his commitment, increase productivity, to keep a resource longer with the company etc. One of such benefits is flexi-time and flexible-work. An employee is free to come to the office at his convenience and leave once the work is done. Even though the law says 40-45 hours a week or so, companies are now open to provide leisure to ease out resources. Recent studies also suggest that good leisure increases productivity and over timing decreases the same.
Taking this into account, consider a situation where an employee who avails such benefits decide to freelance post office hours (which a company cannot control). The time of freelancing can go from 3 hours to even 6 hours and more may be. This again affects the employee's productivity because he is exceeding his limits to meet his outside company commitments. This hampers his productivity in his company because he's worn out, gets less sleep, comes very late to office and his day plan is messed up.
I have encountered such a situation in my office which eventually led the resource to resign because he said he is going through "Mental stress and Depression". As per his time cards, he used to work only 8 hours including an hour of break in my office and no records of heavy work given or even overtime during his tenure.
When the HR department strives to bring in a culture with benefits to enhance productivity and release stress from a resource, whereas they are misusing the same in other ways, What is your call on this? Do you think this should happen to companies who is striving for an employee-friendly culture?

Dear Aishwarya,
The reason why you wrote this post is because one of the employees resigned and while resigning, he quoted his reason of resignation as "mental stress". You say that you do not agree for this reason.
However, while submitting resignation, employee has to give some reason. Possibly, he might have got better opportunity and while leaving the company, he blaming the company's culture. It could be just his alibi. If true then just ignore it and move on.
