I am running a housekeeping unit. In some IT companies, the management is not allowing my employees to work on holidays, including Sundays, without a uniform as the number of people is very less. So please clarify for me whether it is compulsory to wear the uniform on holidays. The uniform is an overcoat; the summer in Chennai is very heavy.

The purpose of wearing a uniform at work by employees is manifold, depending on the nature of work. This includes easy identification, safety, elimination of cross-contamination threats, cost savings for employees, fostering team spirit, and creating a professional image. Therefore, whether it is a working day or a holiday, whenever an employee is required to work, either within the premises or outside, they must wear the prescribed uniform. The strict compliance expected by an employer in this regard cannot be faulted.

Dear Unicare,
The last sentence of your post reads "The uniform is an overcoat; the summer in Chennai is very heavy."
Now, the question arises: Do housekeeping workers wear the overcoat from Monday to Friday? Is the weight of the overcoat less on these days but heavier on Saturday and Sunday?
As stated by Mr. M. Umakanthan, a company uniform provides a distinct identity. If housekeeping employees are expected to wear the uniform, then what if the security guards also ask for an exemption from wearing the uniform on Saturday and Sunday? After all, in personal clothing, a person looks better. Who would not like to look better?
The argument will continue. Therefore, the wiser or more discreet option is to abide by the rules of your client. However, if the weight of the overcoat hampers work during certain activities, then exemptions may be requested on a case-by-case basis.

Dear querist,
Your question is deemed meaningless and trivial, deserving no reply. Nevertheless, knowledgeable members have graciously shared their insights.
It is fundamental that while on duty, whether it be a typical working day or a holiday, the contractor's or company's workers must adhere to the specified uniform. This requirement is non-negotiable and is an integral component of a disciplined work ethic.
