Hi,

I have a very specific query. We submit original medical bills to get an exemption of up to $15,000. If I submitted bills last fiscal year in December and have remaining bills from January to March of last fiscal year, can I submit those in this fiscal year and still get that exemption? This is assuming that we are submitting original bills.

Thank you.

You are talking about FY14-15. You submitted medical bills in December 2014 and want to claim bills from January to March 2015 in FY15-16. A claim can be carried forward in the case of LTA but not for medical expenses, as per my knowledge.

Options for Medical Bill Submission

For medical, you have two options:

1. Manage to produce the entire Rs. 15,000 worth of bills by the date of submission.
2. Since option #1 may not always be possible, the best approach would have been to claim the January to March 2015 bills directly with the IT department while filing the ITR for FY14-15.

I am concerned that if you did not do that, you may not be able to do anything now. You might have to let it go.
