Dear Seniors, I am working with a chemical industry in Bangalore, and usually, every year we declare 1st May as a holiday at all our units. Now, a question has been raised: is it necessary for the corporate office as well? Can anybody please guide me on whether the holiday of May Day, i.e., 1st May, is applicable to the corporate office as well or only to the factories/sites/plants?

Please see the notification of the Shop and Establishment Act in Gujarat. If your corporate office is covered under the Shop and Establishment Act, then follow the state holiday list, which has already been declared.

Thank you,

You need not declare the list of holidays that the state government has declared for their offices. You will have to declare holidays as per the coverage of your organization. See whether your corporate office is covered under the Shop Act or Factory Act.

There are some necessary holidays and festivals under the Act respectively. These holidays must be declared as holidays in addition to the regional festivals.

It's applicable to corporates as well. One way or another, the corporate sector also has a workforce. Therefore, there is no need to classify workers into different categories such as workmen and managerial cadre. For instance, if all holidays are common for everyone, then why differentiate a day as a national holiday? You can always give the day off on May 1 as everyone is working towards the betterment of the company.

Thank you.

Location-Specific Holiday Regulations

Are you asking about a factory in Bangalore (Karnataka) or in Gujarat? The answer will depend on the location.

Many states have a local National and Festival Holidays Act or other notifications that specify certain days when units must declare a holiday. You need to check that out first before making changes to your holiday calendar.

Is this location in Bangalore or Ahmedabad? Each state has its own requirements for holidays. You need to refer to the local Holidays Act, if any, and then decide whether you can or cannot change the holiday calendar.
