Hi Nitish,

Here are answers to your question:

1. What is work from home policy?

Basically companies allow the employees to work from home wherein employees can work out of their home (either at their convenient OR during working hours depends on company policy). They are always available on all the communication modes like calls, emails and chat.

2. How to design an work from home policy for an IT firm ?

When you design such policy first thing you have to keep in the mind that who can be eligible to avail this facility.

It can be given to anybody and everybody.

Employees who has performed well during their tenure understands not to take disadvantage of such facility can be eligible to avail such policy.

Females who stays far, has child or other major responsibilities at home can be given such facility.

However one thing you have to write in the policy that as an when require they have to come to office and also keep one day mandatory wherein they have to come to office.

Give them a time sheet format wherein they have to fill up their daily tasks and send it to their reporting manager.

Everyday when they start working ask them to write a mail to their reporting manager and also while winding up for the day.

These are some major thing you have to keep in your mind.

3. Must points or conditions to be included in work from home policy ?

At the end of the day their time sheet should show productive input and they always have to be available over the calls, email or chat.

4. What staff gets covered under work from home policy ?

Usually normal HR policy can be implemented. However if you want you can reduce on leaves. It depends on your management.

5. Does even HR gets covered under work from home style of work ?

Yes even HR can work out of home.

In addition to some good points listed by Monica, you need to list out the functions that are identified for 'work from home' mode. B.Saikumar HR & labour law Advisor navi Mumbai

Hello Nitish,
We have this policy in our company. There is no written guideline on this policy in our employees hand book. It is optional for the manager whether to permit any person to work from home or not and for how long. We have all work on the internet and lap tops and the performance is checked on daily basis on the time sheet. Actually it is a facility being given to the employees whose targets are high and who have to complete the job in time. The company can not afford to lose the working hours of such employees and so accomodates them to do work on internet during their urgent stay at home due to absence from office on account of reasons such as urgent work, family problem, sickness etc. This facility can not be given to all and sundry and there can not be any compulsion on the management to permit the employees to work from home. It is a mutual understanding and requirement.

Dear Nitish,
Greetings!!!
If you want to frame this policy on your own, you can start off with the suggestions given by many members.
However, if you are looking for professional help ( Paid one, of course) , you can contact the undersigned.
The catch in "work from home" policy is not in framing the policy but in chalking out, how are you going to keep at tab on performance during such period.
