Hello Contributing Members, Thank you for posting your query. I would like to apologize in advance if I may have misunderstood your query. However, I am under the assumption, and as per your post, you are looking to start a career in Learning & Development.

Well, it is a good career. However, you need to ask yourself, why?

Please review some action points to consider:

1. Learning and Development is a support function.

This means that L&D as a department supports the efforts of operations. Example - Sales is a core operations function in an organization. They are the individuals who bring in the money, numbers, etc. L&D supports the initiatives of Sales teams by providing training in various life skills (English Language, Grooming, Negotiation Skills, etc.) that enable the Sales personnel to do their job function successfully. This requires patience, research, understanding, etc., on account of the L&D personnel in bridging the skills.

2. Stream in Learning & Development

While L&D as a function works on the Human Resource Development in an Organization, it has many streams of specialization:

a. Content Developer - Specialization and subject matter expertise in compiling best practices, techniques, tools, study material, researching authors.

b. Designer - Specialization in giving the learning forum the look, feel, visual effects, workbook design, etc.

c. Trainer/Facilitator - Specialization in delivering the learning/knowledge (product knowledge, soft skills, management development, leadership). This role is critical as expertise is required in dealing with difficult audiences while keeping one's own composure and delivering the message/learning.

d. Training Administrator - Specialization in training/learning logistics management. (Classroom bookings, scheduling batches, printing, record management)

e. E-Learning - Specialization in designing, developing, creating storyboards, etc., in delivering learning via technology.

So there are various streams of specializations one can follow depending on individual areas of comfort. If you think that learning is about standing in front of an audience and being looked upon as GOD, then I am sorry to say that you have a wrong impression about the field of L&D.

3. Formal Education

While there are few million training academies mushrooming in every city of India, my advice is kindly consider if it is a certificate you are running after or knowledge on how to be the best.

Having said that, you should be aware of the accreditation that is accepted by organizations as recognized qualification across the globe. The point to note here is that numerous training institutions offer a certified train-the-trainer certification over a 3-6 days period by Mr. Genius from GOD knows where with an assurance to make you Superman or Superwoman in no time.

Questions you need to ask:

1. Is the training institution recognized by any education faculty either locally or internationally?

2. The trainers' qualifications.

3. The Money involved

4. The certification. Who recognizes it?

4. Current Industry accreditation accepted globally

a. CIPD (UK Based. Very commercial and most people in the L&D industry love to have one flashing on their resume)

b. City & Guilds (Commercial again. However, they are known to provide better education)

c. ASTD - American Society of Training & Development - They offer PHD courses.

If you Google these titles, you will learn more about them and will be able to make a better decision. There are various local and international providers offering affiliations with these institutes.

I am not providing any links as I do not want to be looked upon as someone promoting their services.

In the end, I would advise that growing intellectually in L&D takes time. Be patient and have an open mind.

Regards,
