Environmental Impact of Thermocol
Mostly, Thermocol is used for decoration. Thermocol is a non-degradable material. It contains an important thermoplastic compound called polystyrene, which is obtained by the polymerization of styrene or phenylethene. The chemical properties of phenylethene are identical to polyethylene. It responds very slowly to bacterial decomposition in the soil, thus making the soil infertile. It also releases poisonous gases when burned, which can cause respiratory problems or even death when inhaled. Therefore, Thermocol is harmful to the environment.
In my house, we perform Ganesh Pooja, and I decorate the Mandir during this auspicious occasion. However, I never use Thermocol. I opt for an idol that is not made from Plaster of Paris and use all-natural materials for decoration.
