We have an above-ground vertical type storage tank farm for petroleum solvents.

Questions Regarding Storage Tank Farm

1. How much distance should be maintained between one tank and another?
2. What volume of bund should be provided for the tank/tank farm?
3. Is a common bund acceptable, or are separate bunds required for each solvent?

Please share the relevant IS or any standard.

As this is a very urgent requirement, we would appreciate your prompt response.

How much distance has to be maintained between a tank to tank?

As per OSHA 1910.110(b)(6)(vii), the minimum separation between liquefied petroleum gas containers and flammable liquid tanks shall be 20 feet, and the minimum separation between a container and the centerline of the dike shall be 10 feet. This provision does not apply when LP-Gas containers of 125 gallons or less capacity are installed adjacent to Class III flammable liquid tanks of 275 gallons or less capacity.

How much volume bund to be provided for the tank/Tank farm?

As per OSHA 1910.110(b)(19)(v)(a), it is impossible to set out in a table the length of a fixed dip tube for various capacity tanks due to the varying tank diameters and lengths, and because the tank may be installed either in a vertical or horizontal position. The length of the fixed tube should be such that when its lower end touches the surface of the liquid in the container, the contents of the container will be the maximum permitted volume.

For aboveground containers, the liquid temperature is assumed to be 40°F, and for underground containers, the liquid temperature is assumed to be 50°F. To correct the liquid volumes at these temperatures to 60°F, specific gravity and volume correction factors are used.

Is a common bund acceptable, or are separate bunds required for each solvent?

Separate bunds are required.

Hope I answered you on time. I don't have any IS standards with me at the moment.

Regards.

Dear SRM, we had earlier discussed in one thread regarding the Dyke Wall Construction. Please go through the thread below. I am not sure whether it's of help to you or not.

Do let us know if you got a solution to the query or not. Thanks to Raghu for the detailed reply and Sudhir Sir. Keep up the great work.

Thank you very much for your prompt and detailed reply.

1. For my first question, your advice is appropriate.
2. My second and third questions are regarding Bund, i.e., Dyke. However, you understood it as a Dip pipe of the tank. I got the answer from an earlier discussion provided by Mr. Dipil. Thank you very much, Dipil. Even I am searching for an Indian Standard on this subject. If available, I will share it. I request all mates to share the same if available with them.
