Understanding the Notice Period

The notice period is a time frame that begins from the date of your resignation to the scheduled date of your relieving from your current role.

Purpose of the Notice Period

- To ensure an appropriate handover of your job responsibilities, equipment, and knowledge transfer.
- It gives you time to complete your tasks at hand and, therefore, fulfill your commitment towards the company, testing your ethics and integrity.
- To have sufficient time to identify, hire, and train your successor.

Duration of the Notice Period

Notice periods vary from 15 days to 180 days. For some roles, the notice period can be as long as one year. The length of the notice period varies from role to role.

The duration of the notice period is not decided at the time of resignation. Instead, it is determined at the time of joining and is mentioned in your Contract of Employment.

Serving and Negotiating the Notice Period

The notice period can be served in time. It can also be adjusted by making payments in lieu of the notice period. It can be negotiated as well. However, the final decision to negotiate or not to negotiate the notice period is entrusted to the company. Factors that affect the company's decision include your role in the company, the availability of your successor, and your involvement in current projects or assignments.
