Components

A fall-arrest system has multiple components, including two anchor points, a body belt or harness, and the lanyard. Safety harnesses have two connection points, one to the worker's body and one to an anchor point. Connectors must be made from drop-forged steel and have a corrosion-resistant coating. The connection point for a safety harness must be at the center of the wearer's back. Lanyards may not be more than 6 feet long.

Criteria

Effective safety harnesses and personal fall-arrest systems must be capable of supporting a minimum tensile strength of 5,000 pounds; check the manufacturer's specification sheet to verify the tensile strength of the harness. The hooks and connection point devices must also be rated for a minimum tensile load of 5,000 pounds. Accordingly, anchor points for safety harnesses must also be capable of supporting a 5,000-pound load per employee attached.

Limitations

Every employee must have a separate vertical lifeline. Workers may not be allowed to fall more than 6 feet or strike any lower level if an accident occurs. Safety harnesses should be assigned to individual employees who are responsible for inspecting and properly caring for their own fall-arrest system. If any component of a fall-arrest system shows wear or damage during routine inspections, it must be replaced immediately and the damaged parts have to be taken out of service. In addition, any safety harnesses subject to an impact load from a fall must be inspected before returning to service.

Significance

These specifications for safety harnesses are designed to protect workers in case of a fall. Where falls have the potential to be a lethal, a properly worn and anchored fall-arrest system will greatly reduce the severity of any fall. The lanyards attached to safety harnesses will break a person's fall gradually over the space of 3 or 4 feet in order to absorb the energy of a fall. At the end of a fall, the worker has suffered little to no injury.
