Hello Everyone,

We are going to start reference checking of new recruits in-house. Can anybody guide me on what questions we should ask and how we should ask these questions (how to ask these questions in a right/proper way)?

I am eagerly awaiting your valuable guidance.

Ref checks are usually carried out over the phone.

The references should be individuals who have worked with the candidates and know them professionally.

During a call, ask if it is okay to speak to the reference at that point in time. If it is okay, introduce yourself and state the purpose of the call.

Do not mention that "we have selected XYZ for the ABC position." Always state that "we are considering XYZ for a position in our company."

Assure the reference that the reference check is confidential.

Start with open-ended questions such as:

- How do you know XYZ?
- What makes him/her successful?
- What are his strengths?
- What, in your opinion, can make him a better professional? (This is to identify weaknesses)
- Comment on leadership skills.
- How does he/she conduct himself as a team member?
- How are his/her relations with peers from other departments?

If given the opportunity, would you hire him/her?

Thumb rules in a reference check:

- Allow the reference to speak more.
- Engage in discussions rather than just asking questions.
- Always inquire about the reference's current designation and company.

Conclude by asking if more information is needed, can you call again?

I hope this information is helpful to get you started.

Regards,

Anand
