We have received several complaints from people/employees regarding flu-like symptoms when working inside a power transformer. The humidity is almost 0% (2-5%), and the dehumidifier temperature is set at +50 degrees. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as an inline respirator is not feasible.
I am seeking advice on this issue concerning health effects and what control measures would be advisable.
Thank you,

What type of transformer oil is used? Is it a silicon-based fluorinated hydrocarbon, PCB - polychlorinated biphenyls, or other types? Actually, PCB is not in use in many countries nowadays. Its permitted exposure limit is 0.001mg/m3. It is a toxic, carcinogenic type that can cause acute and chronic health effects to workers. Please check the oil that is in use and refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Also, perform a gas test by a certified gas tester: oxygen first (19.5% to 23.5%), then Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), and lastly for toxic gases.
To Reduce Temperature-Related Health Problems in Transformer Work:
- Use job rotation
- Use the acclimatization method
- Provide light-colored clothing and shade
- Offer cold drinking water (not highly cold), making sure to take 1 glass of water every 15 minutes
- Ensure proper rest intervals
- Provide some energy drinks (with no caffeine content, please)
- If an airline respirator cannot be used, utilize a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). If an Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) condition is present, only use SCBA
- Conduct health surveillance for workers
- Ensure proper supervision, training, and information for workers
- Perform risk assessment for work by a competent person
- If possible, use Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)
I hope these corrections and suggestions are helpful. Let me know if you need further assistance.
