Hello Friends,
I am working as an HR for the past 9 months in a software company which has a staff of 30-35 employees. I have been urging the management to issue employee ID cards, which have not been provided. The management does not see the need for it, especially since the attendance system is not linked to it. However, I strongly believe that even a small organization, calling itself a company, should issue ID cards to its employees. It serves as proof for the employee that they are indeed working for the company. Therefore, I am persistently requesting my management to address this issue. Can anyone provide me with solid and valid reasons, in addition to the ones I have mentioned, as to why a company should provide ID cards to its employees? Every time I present reasons to the management, they find a way to dismiss them.
Some reasons I have given are:
1. If employees work late into the night, the police may question them on their way home, where an ID card can serve as proof of engagement in office work.
2. Employee ID cards are essential for tasks like opening bank accounts or obtaining a mobile connection.
3. ID cards symbolize employee branding and contribute to their respect in the work culture they are part of.
Is there any Indian law or act specifying the necessity of providing ID cards to employees? I am looking for responses that can help me address my dilemma. Please assist.
Thank you.

Dear Varsha,
Employee card is a must for employees for various reasons such as attendance, discipline, verifications, address proof, etc., but it's not mandatory for attendance purposes in a small organization. However, they can provide ID cards for marketing purposes because, to my knowledge, it's a cost-effective marketing solution for small organizations. Just imagine a staff member wearing ID cards going to different places; people see your company name, and upon seeing it, some may inquire about your company profile, etc.
Some companies even provide t-shirts and caps for your information.
If you need any more information, please email me at shakeel@6sos.com.
I hope I'm not wasting your valuable time.
Thank you,
Syed

Varsha,
I strongly believe the company has to provide ID cards for the employees, whether it's small or big. It's mandatory too. I hope there is an Indian law or act specifying the necessity of providing ID cards to employees.
I will give this info to you ASAP.

Thank you, Nataraj. I am eagerly awaiting your reply. I have reviewed the Bombay Shops and Establishment Act in this regard. Our company is a US-based organization with its registered office in the US. Research and development as well as sales operations take place in our India office. Therefore, I am unsure whether Indian acts would be applicable. I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
