Improving Workplace Culture in a Construction Company
I have recently joined a construction company where there are 30 staff members working in the office, while others are working on-site. Upon joining, I observed an improper working culture characterized by a lack of punctuality and egoism between junior and senior employees. The staff engage in unusual working practices, spending a significant amount of time on unproductive activities. Most employees have been with the company for 2 to 5 years.
On most days, senior staff members are away for meetings or other tasks, leaving me responsible for managing all employees and handling all office responsibilities. I aim to put an end to these improper practices gradually but effectively.
I seek your assistance in resolving these issues smoothly.

Dear Chetan, Please check if your company has framed rules for staff. If they are already in place, kindly implement them. If such rules do not exist, please create a fresh set of rules. Include in them guidelines for the current issues you are facing as well as potential future challenges. Display these draft rules on the notice board for suggestions from employees. After a period of time, you can proceed with implementing the finalized rules.

Thank you so much for giving proper guidance for resolving the problem. As per your suggestion, first of all, I have to prepare rules and policies because right now, there aren't any kind of rules and policies in the firm. Then I have to move forward.

As you mentioned that you are new to the organization while others have been employed for 2-5 years, you should first find out why the system of "Discipline" has not been enforceable. If you try to implement or enforce the new "Discipline" system, others may not appreciate it and might make you the scapegoat. Try to ascertain from the management why strict discipline was not implemented. Only proceed if you receive a proper response from management on this matter. Otherwise, become a part of the team and gradually demonstrate your leadership skills in improving the new system.
ALL THE BEST!
Establishing Rules and Policies
Thank you so much for providing guidance on resolving the issue. As per your suggestions, the first step is to establish rules and policies since there are currently none in place in the firm. Once this is done, I can move forward.

You make me remember my joining last year. I was in the same situation and the same environment. I tried and worked harder to understand the reasons behind the issues in the workplace.
"There were no policies in the company for employees to follow."
Every day, I sat with my MD to discuss the necessary implementations. With those points, I prepared the company policies, which were implemented with management approval. Gradually, everyone accepted the system, essential for any organization.
Suggestions for Policy Implementation
I suggest you observe the environment, find the right solutions, and discuss them with management. I am confident that management will approve the policies you create because the company needs them. You are appointed to resolve issues and create a smooth working environment through proper policy implementation.
