Introduction
My brother went to his office in the morning shift and collapsed there. The office staff got him hospitalized, and he was diagnosed with a brain stroke. It was a life-threatening critical illness. He was admitted to the hospital on 27th September 2018, and surgery was done on 3rd October 2018. The patient was hospitalized until November 2018 and suffered left-side paralysis. He attended physiotherapy sessions from December 2018 to January 2019. The second surgery was done on 6th February 2019. The insurance company reimbursed the hospital and physiotherapy bills, but due to the co-pay in insurance, the family suffered a loss of 1.5 lakhs. The patient's company paid him only for three months from October to December 2018, and no salary was paid from January 2019 to May 2019. The patient suffers from permanent disability and is still at home.
Concerns about Critical Illness and Employment
We all work hard for years, often in shifts—morning, evening, and night. Until we are fit and healthy, there are no issues. But what if we suffer a critical illness and get hospitalized while on the job? What is the company's role and responsibility in this situation? While working, I don't recall ever asking HR about the medical insurance cover, although I've heard of employees getting hospitalized.
Questions on Company Responsibility
What if an employee suffers a life-threatening illness while on the job, such as a stroke or an accident in company transport? What happens if the employee becomes disabled, paralyzed, and cannot resume work even after a year? Who is responsible? Does the employee receive salary compensation even after a year or more if they are in a disabled state? What if the employee cannot resume life as before? It is easy to leave an injured employee to the family. What if the person has no one except elderly parents? Will the old parents take care of themselves or their injured child?
Financial and Emotional Support
A person goes to the hospital, and there is a risk to their life. Medical bills can amount to 10-15-20 lakhs or even more. What if the family cannot bear these bills? What should they do? Let their family member die? Even if a person survives, what if they require medical treatment for a longer period, more than six months? A person might need emotional support, physiotherapy, nursing care, and medicines. Who will pay for expenses running into lakhs?
Social Support and Job Stress
In such situations, so-called friends and close ones are often the first to run away; everyone suddenly becomes very busy. What is the mistake of a person if they cannot handle increasing job stress? What future does such a person have if they become disabled? Why should such a person be left to the family for recovery? Until you are fit and fine, you are of use to the company. Once you get injured, you are left alone to the family. What if the person goes into depression?
