Ever since prehistoric times, India has been a large landmass comprising a multi-ethnic population, different languages, cultures, monsoons, and a constant exchange of domestic and international trade and commerce. Foreign invasions and colonization also added to the diversity of its working population. However, the political unification of the country under the British, the industrialization that began during British Rule in the wake of the Industrial Revolution and continued after independence, the rapid process of consequential urbanization, and the spread of institutional education facilitated the migration of the workforce across the country.
Thus, workforce diversity has existed for a long time in various parts of the country depending on industrial concentration. Thanks to the advent of Globalization and the IT Revolution worldwide, workforce diversity became more pronounced following the liberalization policy adopted by the Government of India in July 1991, and this trend continues to this day.
