Dear Guidance-Seeker,

Your query: "How important is it to get a pre-medical check-up for employees? Gurgaon. 30.6.17

Team Kritarth Clarifies: Are you referring to the Medical Examination known as "Pre-Employment Medical Examination"?

Employment-related Medical Examinations are:

1. Pre-Employment Medical Examination by the Employer-Authorized Registered Medical Practitioner administered to selected/short-listed candidates before joining, subject to a "Found Fit For Employment" written report. This exam is routinely administered also to such a candidate/job applicant who is unable to produce a valid date of birth certificate to record his/her age for purposes of the establishment's record and for computing the date of his/her superannuation.

2. Medical Examination to clinically assess the fitness for duty of an existing employee where deemed necessary, particularly in cases of chronic/habitual absenteeism where employees regularly submit medical certificates for resuming duties, and in cases where the concerned employed person has remained sick/on sick leave for a longer period, such as a year or so.

3. Medical Exam for certain employed persons in specified occupations (i.e., canteen services, food preparation, distribution, etc.) to ascertain if and when the concerned person is fit to continue in those specified tasks.

4. In the event the concerned person sustains injuries in the course of and arising out of employment/workplace requiring first aid followed by regular medical exam/treatment resulting in unfitness for duty or to assess loss of earning capacity related exam.

5. Medical Exam in cases where an aggrieved woman complains of injuries inflicted on her arising out of sexual assault and similar situations arising out of and in the course of her being at the workplace.

Medical examinations of all categories are aimed to ascertain fitness for employment or compensation or settlement on medical grounds. By that yardstick, employment-related medical exams are expedient.

Team Kritarth welcomes views, standpoints, and suggestions to improve upon our understanding of the need for medical exams.
