Chemical Safety Presentation Using MSDS

I am attaching a presentation on Chemical Safety using MSDS. It will be helpful for all chemical-handling employees if you provide thorough training for a better understanding. You can also add or modify it with examples of chemicals used at your site. MSDS should be reviewed and updated biannually. Please provide your comments.

Dear All,

Understanding the Difference Between STEL and TWA

What is the difference between STEL and TWA? And what is the application of the same in industrial safety?

Let me explain this by using a real-life example.

The present problem in Mumbai regarding commuting by road is traffic jams. Particularly at signal points, a lot of automobile emissions occur, leading to increased pollutants in the atmosphere.

If we consider this as a workplace and the work of automobile drivers and traffic police as working people, then STEL would be applicable to drivers. However, for police, the TWA would be applicable.

The drivers would pass through the polluted area in less time, but the traffic police would be there for all duty hours.

In most of the plating industries I have seen, the jobs are assembled on fixtures. Assembly is done at a workstation which has a U-type layout or in multiple rows adopting a single-piece flow concept. The assembly workstation is at the center or on one side of the shop. The chemical tanks have fume collection systems as well as scrubbers.

The operator has to go to the tanks for loading and unloading and then return to the assembly station for assembly/disassembly.

Workplace monitoring at the assembly station has to be done for TWA, where the operator works most of the time.

Workplace monitoring at the breathing height of the operator is to be done for STEL, as the operator goes to the tank only for loading and unloading, which takes less than 10 minutes.

The most ideal situation is to limit the concentration of pollutants to even less than TWA limits.

The Factories Act Second Schedule has defined different values for the above two.

I invite all of you to share your views on this matter.

Sudhir

Understanding MSDS and Its Importance

MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. If any chemicals are used in a company, it is the responsibility of management to make the MSDS available. The physical and chemical properties are given in this document. The specific information on precautions to be taken for health and safety during transportation, storage, use, and disposal are provided in the MSDS. Management is supposed to provide all safety controls as defined in the MSDS, and operators have to follow all precautions and use PPEs.

Chemical Identification and Accessing MSDS

Every chemical has a unique identification number known as the CAS number (Chemical Abstract Service). If you know the CAS number of a chemical, you can easily access the MSDS online. Alternatively, you can search the SIRI Index to find the MSDS of the desired chemical. It is essential to convert the safety instructions into the local language and communicate the hazards to the workers.

If you need any further information, please revert back.

Dear Team,

It is just some information. Actually, I was talking to Ex-CIF, Delhi, a few days back and asked something about MSDS. As I mentioned "MSDS," the Ex-CIF, Mr. Sharma, informed me that it is no longer called MSDS. It has been replaced by the term SDS, i.e., Safety Data Sheet only. Please get it confirmed.

Dear Inderjeet & Raghu,

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Subsequent to the discussion on MSDS or SDS, I searched the net and found the following link which supports what Inderjeet mentioned: Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

The only thing to ensure is whether it is applicable in our country as well. The mentioned website is from Australia.

Thanks for the link. Please refer to the contents of MSDS and SDS; the contents are the same. Maybe in Australia, they are calling it SDS. The important thing is to study and communicate hazards, arrange systems as per MSDS/SDS, and dispose of materials as per the given instructions. However, the document "PREPARATION OF SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS - CODE OF PRACTICE" is good. I shall comment after I read it.

Thanks again.
