To find out the attrition rate formula:
[ text{Attrition Rate} = frac{text{Total number who have left}}{(text{Opening balance} + text{Closing balance})/2} times 100 ]
To find out the closing balance:

Attrition is also calculated on an annualized basis. The formula for this is: Annualized Attrition = (Total number of attrition in 'x' months / Average number of employees for 'x' months) * (12/'x' months) For example, until July 31, 2010, you had a total of 60 employees who have attrited, and your average manpower for this period was 1212 employees (financial year considered i.e. April to March period), then your calculation shall be: (60/1212)*(12/4)

Well, with this calculation, the attrition rate is calculated on a yearly basis only. If you want to find out the attrition rate on a monthly basis, you have to multiply it by 12. This means:
Attrition Rate = Number of Employees Left / Total Number of Employees for the same period * 100 * 12
Similarly, for a 6-month period:
Attrition Rate = Number of Employees Left / Total Number of Employees for the same period * 100 * 6
I hope this explanation helps you understand the calculation better.

Nice discussion. Can you provide me with the rate of attrition for the following example? Sixteen employees have left within four years in a department that has a total strength of 14 employees. For 1.5 years, the department was maintained by 12 officers.

Attrition Rate: Attrition Calculation - Formula
Ex: Month Left Emp. Manpower
APR 10 1600
MAY 5 1525
JUN 5 1450
JULY 10 1550
AUG 10 1500
Total: 40 7625
Avg. Manpower: 1525
Attrition Rate: 0.06
In the calculation above, the attrition rate is determined by dividing the number of employees who left in a given period by the number of months, then multiplying by 12 months, and finally dividing by the average manpower, all multiplied by 100%.
