Hi,
One of our employees had gone on maternity leave by mid-March, and the employee assessment for promotion was effective from April 1st. She has taken extended leave until November 30th. Now, she is trying to claim promotion and an appraisal, stating that she was eligible for promotion/appraisal. How should we proceed with this? Please revert urgently.
Thank you.

Promotion is not an acquired right of an employee; it is a reward for performance to elevate the employee based on suitability and depends on the following conditions:
The assignment of an employee to a different job classified in a higher grade is based on organizational needs, the existence of a vacant approved job, fulfillment of job requirements relative to peers, and is subject to management approval.
Please take these factors into consideration before reviewing the request by the employee.

Thanx for the input. Need another clarification - if an employee is eligible for annual appraisal and the employee is on maternity leave, will she be getting her appraisal / salary hike?

Appraisal is done of her performance for the remaining actual working period. It's management's discretion to decide what they deem fit. Maternity leave has no bar on her eligibility for performance appraisal because an appraisal is for performance, not increment. All performance appraisals do not result in increments.
