If an employee shows up for a scheduled shift and is sent home for reasons beyond the employer's control (power loss, hazardous situation, etc.), are there minimum pay requirements?

Similarly, if an employee arrives for a scheduled shift and is terminated upon arrival (pre-planned by the employer), are there pay requirements for that day?

Thank you!

It is more of an IR question than HR. I think we are talking here about the employees who get a salary for the hours they work, such as industrial laborers.

If an employee is sent back because of a power outage or some uncontrollable factors, they need to be given another shift. If the employee turns up for the next shift and still is not provided work, 50% payment needs to be given.

Normally, these factors are negotiated between the Trade Unions and the management. So, if the management deliberately takes such steps, chances are they might have to face IR problems with the trade union.

It also depends on industry to industry.

In either case, as mentioned by my friend, one day's salary needs to be paid if he turns up for the shift for the day he is not able to work for other reasons. No salary to be paid if he is terminated for indiscipline. :)
