Hi Shweta,
There are a few things one could do in such situations:
1. Make the boss feel that he is the boss
2. Involve him in all the decisions/initiatives
3. Thank him for his contributions
4. Give him credit for your success
Tact is the key here. Talent while is essential for one to do well in the career, it alone isn't enough. Tact (political-savviness) is equally important for one to succeed in one's career.
I suggest that your friend continue here for some more time. Difficult Bosses, like the one in case, will help us build behavioral qualities which will help us in our career, as we grow.
Thanks
Anand

Hi Shweta

I would like to agree with Mr.S.Shamantha Raj on this.

Business is an economic activity to meet customer needs profitably... HR is a cost center and will continue to be in times to come for most of the organisations today.

If I am a profit center head (I assume this is what that boss in question is), ideally my focus should be on topline and bottom line of business. Some managers feel that in order to get best out of the workforce, there has to be a sense of competetion... so what they do, they try to make their team members compete with each other, sometimes at their own cost.

The constant challange with the boss is to get the results from the team. This becomes crucial when you have indirect reportees (reportees of your direct reportees). Their CTC is added to your own cost to the company.

If your direct reportees and indirect reportees team up, you risk low productivity of your team and hence your Job.

The easiest way of overcoming this is Not to allow this teamup to happen and put people in tight spots for business sake... nothing personal.

This has a direct conflict with individual interests sometimes and as a executive I may feel the L2 manager is a bad manager. And since I am frequently in tight spot, easiest way out is exit. Company also doesnot bother much as you are a low cost resource that too in a cost center.

The above argument is basis an assumption that your friend, her boss and L2 manager are doing their jobs honestly and putting sincere efforts in achieving organisation goals.

If you spot someone who is not putting sincere efforts rather creating obstacles for those who try doing it, you should ideally try to put that person in tight spot ... remember no one in any organisation is bigger than organisational goals. If you are doing your job sincerely no one can point finger at you... just keep track of what you do and how it impacts the organisation

I will not advice your friend to change job for this reason

cheers

Hi,
From the share info, its very clear the boss has egos problems, this will destroy the whole working envirnoment and the business on the large. The job of a responsible HR is to sit out with the boss on the cool time and reason his attitude, which he or she will realise as the company is his creation. Hr role under this situation will be tough but if you come out of this sucessfull, you are the best in making people get convinced.

I would like to post my opinion
HR Manager should speak to the boss and explain about the advantages of decentralisation. The HR Manager should make the boss understand that decentralisation of work will make the boss to concentrate on larger vision ofthe company and at the sametime HR Manager will also have an authority, respect and command over others(i.e improves the job satisfaction). It is the win-win situation.
Also the HR Manager should check with the boss by putting questions like this so as to make him focus attention on the HR Manager.
If the boss is in vengence with the HR Manager, then it is advisable to leave the job by posting complaint to the top management or should adjust with the situation.
This is my view & opinion.
would like to have comments of others pl.
Thanks & regards,
B VIJAYAKRISHNAN

Dear Shweta,
You have used similar language at two places "has shown his true colors by sneaking around about her in front of hr executive" what do you mean by it precisely ? does it mean he tried some favour being female from her ??? and trying to harras her by using these tactics from phase 1 to phase 2 now, earlier SHE WAS ENJOYING AUTONOMY AND LATER WHEN SHE REFUSED HIS ADVANCEMENTS he took the authority back ??
Is it the case ??? tell me to give solution to handle him ?

hi shweta
read ur story
i think u should hire a proper snob as an assistant (if a better looking girl the better) for ur boss
i have a hunch that whatever results after that will make that guy see a better picture of the world after the clash.
what i mean is that as a member pointed out it is personality miss match.
U as an HR manager have the responsibility to help ur boss out.
Show him the mirror but be prepared for the emergency back up.
benevolence always helps backwards.

Hi,
I think it is too late to reply for this thread, even then I want to say something regarding the same topic.
You have to think on the situation properly it may be a chance for you to learn a lot by working with bad boss. Remember that you are getting problems means you are on the right path.
Leasen to your heart and do accordingly.

Hi Shweta

Please tell me following
  1. Core business of your organistion
  2. Organisation heirarchy - i.e. how far is top boss from this role
  3. Tenure of boss with the company
  4. His total experiance and background
  5. Total Experiance of your friend and her educational background.
Putting one more hypothesis across...

Assuming the boss is a good employee as he has been recruited through the same hiring process as your friend... and she is a 'good' employee

These are recession times and I can safely assume this organisation is also going through similar times...

Pressure on bottomline...resulting a pressure to top managers to cut down expenses and retrench the staff and save some salary bill.

So, pressurise the team and after few months you will automatically get a lean team and hence lower salary bill.

Different people have different ways to put pressure...

Second hypothesis...
The boss is threatened and unsecure about his own job... desperately looking for a scape goat who will allow him to save his job for some more time...
