Dear All,

I am Shivani, working as a Placement Coordinator with an institute. I have previously worked as a Cabin Attendant with Indigo and Kingfisher airlines. Recently, I received a job offer from a leading Telecom company to work as an Executive Assistant to the Circle Head. This company is a better brand and, of course, offers a higher salary.

I am seeking guidance on whether it is sensible to make the switch. Are there better growth opportunities available there? I am not interested in continuing in the Aviation sector as it does not provide job stability.

Please help!

Thank you.

Dear Shivani,

You have not given us any idea about your educational qualifications, nor have you provided any information on the span of your experience. Therefore, it is difficult to advise you on what would be a better career option for you, especially when looking into future prospects.

How long have you been working as a Placement Coordinator? Is the Institute a reputed one with a good all-India ranking?

If you are comfortable and can grow in an academic environment, you can continue in your current role. On the other hand, if the Executive Assistant (EA) job is paying well and is with a leading brand, you may consider switching. However, please bear in mind that an EA role is generally considered a dead-end job in terms of career progression. While it does offer tremendous learning opportunities and the aura of power, the working hours are long and tedious.

If you are seeking career progression and growth, it is advisable not to continue in this designation or role for an extended period. I hope the above information is helpful to you.

Warm regards.

Hi Shivani,

An Executive Assistant won't offer you growth in the short term, but when we talk about the long term, understanding the intricacies and details of the job is essential. Only then can you diversify, although this usually takes more time for significant growth. I have seen Executive Assistants who are now working as General Managers in the Telecom Sector. Email me the company you are joining, and I would be in a better position to guide you on the culture and organization at gaggan_sahni@hotmail.com. Remember, experience and qualifications lead to growth, and if one of them is missing, it can be a bit challenging.

Thank you.

Hi,

I wanted to ask, what profiles can an EA switch to after being in the industry for a few years? I have been working as an EA for the last 5 years in the best of India, telecom companies, and MNCs. I do understand that one can progress to becoming a GM or VP of departments; however, please specify what other options are available. I am looking for specific suggestions, not general ones.

I do not see a bright future ahead as the work tends to become repetitive with minimal monetary growth. Please guide me as I am currently seeking a job change.

Hello Experts,

I am an MBA graduate in Insurance Business Management from Birla Institute of Management Technology, one of India's top 25 B-schools. I wished to enter the underwriting department in an insurance company. However, I ended up as an Executive Assistant to the Vice President at Shriram General Insurance Co. I do not see any growth in terms of salary here. While switching to another organization as an Executive Assistant could offer me a better salary, I believe the EA role is a dead-end position. Can I progress to higher positions? Please guide me.

Hello, Mr. Kumar,

I am also going through the same confusion. I am currently working as an EA to an MD. I have 5 years of experience in Admin and 1 year of experience in HR. Due to some circumstances, I ended up in an EA role. Now, I want to switch my job but change my role. Can anyone please suggest to me which role I should approach first after working as an EA, where I do not have to compromise on salary?

Looking for valuable advice.

Regards,
Ritika
