Did they not tell you in your course what management is about? If they have, what is the point in asking us? If they have not, then you are in the wrong institution, and you had better quit and join another one. If that's not possible, please search the web. I think it's better for me and you if I teach you how to find information rather than give it to you.

Hey all,
I really can't understand such kind of replies. Please post if you really like that or leave it. Don't make the member too bad to be a part of this site. Even board members should mind this.
Dear Simhan,
Management, as books might have differences from experience, let the member learn how to post. I really can't understand this aggressiveness in posting. How can you judge if one institute is bad or good? May be out of curiosity!
But can you delete the posts in the threads? Is it really a good practice? Left to the almighty.
Dear Sarkar,
"IMPOSSIBLE WORD MEANS I M POSSIBLE." What is the need for this when you say you don't know?
Dear all,
Respect all members and teach them how to post.

There are two ways to define the term Management. One is bookish definition and another one is practical definition.
Let me talk about bookish definition first:
Management is an activity to get people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives. Management comprises Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Leading/Directing and Controlling.
Now here we discuss about practical definition of management:-
Responsible person in the organization or a group of people who are really act as a decision maker and responsible for getting the things done are known as management employees and called as Management. Management has experts of Staffing, Directing/Leading, Controlling, Planning and Organizing. One who expert in Staffing may not having ability of controlling or One who having expertness in Planning may not having ability of Staffing. Only because of this Organizations looking for experts in some respected fields to get the things done and that people collectively known as Management.
Hope this will help you.
Request : Please don't harass anybody – if you don't like they way to ask question of someone then just ignore it.

Hi....
it might be use for you...
Management focuses on the entire organization from both a short and a long-term perspective. Management is the managerial process of forming a strategic vision, setting objectives, crafting a strategy and then implementing and executing the strategy.
Management goes beyond the organization's internal operations to include the industry and the general environment. The key emphasis is on issues related to environmental scanning and industry analysis, appraisal of current and future competitors, assessment of core competencies, strategic control and the effective allocation of organizational resources.
In general terms, there are two approaches to management:
-The Industrial Organization Approach: This approach is based on economic theory which deals with issues like competitive rivalry, resource allocation, economies of scale. This approach to management assumes rationality, self interested behavior, profit maximization.
- The Sociological Approach: This approach deals primarily with human interactions. It assumes rationality, satisfying behavior, profit sub-optimality.
Management theories can also be divided into two sets. One is the set that concentrates mainly on efficiency and another is the set that concentrates mainly on effectiveness. Efficiency is about doing things the right way. It involves eliminating waste and optimizing processes. Effectiveness is about doing the right things.
A good management style is a blend of both efficiency and effectiveness. There is no point in acting efficiently if what you are doing will not have the desired effect.
Management techniques can be viewed as either bottom-up, top-down, or collaborative processes.

If you split the term "management" = "manage" + "men," it becomes "management." In simple terms, "men" can be anything. The rest you can take from notes, or you will understand as you get more experienced.

Dear Gayu,
I would like to thank you and appreciate you for raising this thread about "Management." Look, we have got some innovative and different ideas. As we can see, the definition of Management varies with different ideas and perceptions. It's not necessary that what management means to one person is the same for another. We have different ideas here.
Also, remember to read books, search on Google, but understand that you are most welcome to raise any query related to HR. We still have broad-minded members here who would definitely encourage you and provide you with solutions in a better way. So keep going with your questions. Thanks to all those who have answered in a positive way and not with a sarcastic attitude.
Also, remember, one who asks a doubt may be a fool for some time, but the one who never asks at the right time remains a fool forever. So, keep this positive and optimistic attitude always.
Take care and all the best.
Cheers,

Well, according to me, management is all about managing people, and more people and getting them to work. You can make machines do what you want, but just try that with people!
In practice, forget what the books say. Just use all your senses (more than 5, intuition, psychology, anything) to get the best out of people and lead them onward. In the process, they should feel uplifted and motivated!
That's all. 😕😄💡😕

Dear Ravi_HRM and others:
I would have agreed with you, had the question been something like: "...I have studied Management and related concepts, yet I am not able to grasp the essence. I am curious to know if experienced persons who apply the principles of Management have any other definition of Management than the academic one... etc."
In the present form, Nashbramhall, a Senior Member and Board Moderator, is perfectly right in getting irritated. The question is like a person who got a driving licence (maybe without passing a driving test but "managing" it) asking "What is a car?" or a person with an LLB degree (again maybe a "managed" degree) asking, "What is a court?"
Seen in this light, Nashbramhall has rightfully responded with certain apprehension about the institute.
This is a forum for HR professionals - seasoned or otherwise - who network to gain new knowledge on intricacies and ambiguity of HR issues and its future developments. Such generic questions do dilute its seriousness. If you are a sportsman, then you'll understand - would test players prefer to play matches with mohalla cricket team?
And finally, my answer to Gayu is:
My dear, there are many definitions of "management," but the concept is so broad and deep that management gurus keep working at it. There are many everyday questions (like, why did Ramalinga Raju have to do it? How come a company like GM could not avoid it? Why did US banks get into sub-prime loans and got the whole world deep into this recession) to which we are yet to find any answer.
In my opinion, "management" is what certain workers in a big industry told me, some twenty years back:
- MANAGing MEN Tactfully
- getting THINGS done (by hook or by crook - added as an afterthought)
- knowing everything (as in 'management knows everything')
Regards.

The word "management" contains words like "man," "age," "men," and "ment." Using this, you can define "management" as an art of getting the work done by mentoring individuals of different ages, including women, towards a common goal or purpose.

There is a lot of controversy over the term “MANAGEMENT”. Without going into the controversy let's try to understand it. Management is simply a discipline like medical, teaching, law and any other profession. Those who practice medical called doctors and practitioner of law called lawyers likewise practitioner management called manager.
The discipline of management is different form other discipline in some respect. See while for practicing profession like law, medical and Company Law etc. one need to posses an essential prescribed qualification but for practicing management one need not to posses any degree or diploma in the relevant field. One can be a successful manager on the basis of experience and wisdom. Second difference may be the results. A manager is concerned not only with the process of doing something but also with the result. He has to be result oriented.
What you say? Let me have your views on this……….

Hi,
Simply put, management is utilizing the given resources to the maximum in the most efficient manner to deliver the required results. I guess the one-liner says it all. This can, of course, be discussed in detail.

Dear Gayu,
Congratulations on seeking the right definition. Primarily, management does not entail all the above-mentioned aspects that people have shared with you. Instead, it involves managing your non-productive, unskilled, bureaucratic bosses. Secondly, it pertains to managing your organization, as correctly defined by your well-wishers. If you grasp the primary concept, undoubtedly, you will become a successful manager.
