It is fine if you don't want to answer. I am a student not working anywhere, pursuing an MBA. The company has given me two topics, and now I have to select between multiskilling and 5S for the summer project. Thank you.

Skill Matrix is the overall representation of workers with respect to their skills. For example, if there are three operations that are carried out to produce a product and three workers are required, then giving grades on how efficiently they can perform their own operation and forming a matrix will conclude the skill matrix. If we train one worker to do all three operations, then it will be called multiskilling.

It's not that I do not want to answer. As an MBA student, you should learn to search for information, rather than seek info on a plate. I have taught MBA students for years.

The following extract from a student's post should inform you about my method. If you search CiteHr for info on 5S, you will find a lot of posts.

Hello friends....

Situation will make us do things... we are all in search of capsules, right? I also made an attempt, a shortcut for easily getting the questionnaire, but I failed. I found all types of questionnaires over here but except our topic. It was very urgent for me, and there were no options at all. At last, lazy Sayana also decided to prepare a questionnaire by herself, and I did. For that, I referred to the Factory Act of welfare measure, company profile, their welfare facilities, questionnaire formats available over here, etc., etc. So, all time of my experience shows that we become lazy because of the facilities available to us. Actually, all this is meant to make us more capable, but we are misusing these facilities. I am also in that list. At first, I got irritated when I read the reply by the moderator Mr. Nashbramhall, advising not to expect someone else to send a questionnaire. At that time, I thought then for what purpose this CiteHr is for. Anyway, I know you people are also like me, so I am attaching my questionnaire with regard to welfare measures. I don't know how much I succeed in preparing these questionnaires, but I hope it will also be helpful to you dudes.

With regards,

Sayana

Hey Jiah,

How are you doing, dear? How is your project going? A skill matrix is basically a chart containing all the skills required to do a particular job, where we can rate the individual's competencies based on fixed parameters. I am attaching some formats or examples for a skill matrix. I hope this will help you in understanding things better.

Good luck,
Surbhi Gupta :)

Hi all,

Thanks, Surbhi, the sheets are really helpful. I just have one doubt; when we used to have a skill matrix in our organization, we used to get the skills evaluated by team leaders or shift supervisors, and they used to rate the employees. I hardly could understand the criteria for the same, and I often doubted the credibility of it. Is there any method to evaluate the skills on an actual or fair basis?

Hi Surbhi,

I'm good, and how are you doing? I cancelled the discussion on 5S and decided to focus on skill development or multi-skilling. Thank you for your information. However, I need more details on multi-skilling. If you have the format, please share. Thank you.

Hi Neha,

The technical skills are always evaluated by an immediate supervisor or can also be done by an indirect reporting manager. Credibility is a big question for me as well. Let our seniors answer it. To evaluate it on an actual basis, we can go one step higher, i.e., competency mapping.

Surbhi🌟

Hi Surbhi, thanks for taking care of the query. Even I have been looking for this answer for a long time. We request the seniors to please guide us through.

Even in competency mapping, what I have observed is that the main decision-making authority lies with the supervisor only. So, if we are not getting the real picture, then there's no genuine output from such assessments. Shouldn't we try to approach this by considering real-life work situations?

For example, when we look at production, different individuals handle tasks like designing, tooling arrangements, etc. Therefore, when it comes to designing, shouldn't we consider the employee's strengths and areas where they face challenges in their drawings? By analyzing a few examples like this, we can gain a better understanding and then discuss these findings with the employee to get a clearer picture.

Looking forward to your replies.

hi dear , your skill matrix is good but when you have given the colour coding then you should not write the IL NO , because this si not a proper way either colour coding or no colour only indication.

Yes Neha, you are right. We should first identify the competencies required to a particular job and then map individual's skills on those parameters.

Like in your example; for tool or mould designer we can take the competencies like designing skills, knowledge of software – PRO –E or Catia etc. Then we have to define a scale on which we can map their current skills and actual skills required to do the job. We can fill this gap by providing them appropriate trainings.

Hope I have answered your question.

Ya surbhi, that was my query.instead of just filling in the papers by asking hod’s to fill it at their own call, the process should be given some sensible direction. Thanks.:)

5s topic is much better to discuss instead of discussing skill mtrix because 5s includes everything. devender mudgal 09756606955
