Dear Friends & Seniors,
The question I have here for all of you is quite a strange once as you all may say rather agree ?
" Can attendance status of an employee be a criteria for grading his/her performance appraisal system ?"
Yes, it is a strange case of a boss (owner of the company) trying to incorporate the same in this system, fooling the employees that it part of the ISO Systems to do so...
Well, in my span of 11 years of working in the private sector, I have never come across such a system where it is included.
Your responses to this story is invited..in an objective manner..

hello...
hmmm i dont think so attendance is part of the Performance appraisal system.. because in work field getting work done in right time with proper manner is important not attendance. if employee is present for 100% but not working then how can one consider employee's performance is good??? performance system is based on efficiency and creativity of the employee... not on attendence

yes, if it is in IT or ITeS segment, wherein log in time/hrs and extra mile is a key factor in SLA achievement. This may not be applicable in Sales/Marketin or any other segment which requires physical employee movement. In BPO, adherence to schedule, log in hrs, has a major role to play.
Thanks...

Hello,
I Dont know if its fooling or not.
But attendance can be a part of the appraisal system. My first c9ompany (IT/ITES) had this as a part of the appraisal and 5 points allocated to the same. Like above 95% attendance will have 5 points, above 80% 4 points - like wise..
There is nothing so abnormal abt it.
And it does not mean that employees are only gauged through attendance. It is one of the criteria. Ofcourse - that also shows your commitment. In one way some cos use this a parameter - to encourage the ppl not to take a leave - which will ultimately be a great hit for the employers esp in case of BPO / IT / ITES.
Again - pls note "Attendance" is not the only parameter. Its one of the parameters, and performance is also given due importance it must receive.

Dear Friends,
Thanks for your inputs..
I am expecting some more from you.......
What would you have to say for an employee who overachieves in terms of his/her targets but doesn't have a 100 % attendance ?
A part of the question, where the boss says that it is part of ISO (QMS) Mandatory standards ( I hope many of you might have gone through the standards manual).......how many of you would agree with it...?
Take for e.g. this case, An employee achieves 80% of his targets with a 100 % attendance, whereas another employee achieves 80% of the targets with 80% attendance. Who do you rate as a better performer ? How would you rate their performance ?
Is it a ploy to discourage employees from taking the privilege leaves, LTA etc., which are part of the benefits in terms of employment.? In either case, the employer has to pay LE in case of balance leaves or the employee loses in case of availing leaves...
Expecting your valuable comments..

Hi Debashis
I also agree with Ash in this regards there in nothing wrong in introducing attendance as one of the parameters...
But every attribute has its own weightage in that case performance will always be criteria with higher weightage than others...so evaluating both of them on same importance will be wrong on our part.
To bring punctuality, commitment and sense of responsibility among employees if a company is introducing this parameter there is nothing wrong in that.

Attendance cannot be OR rather should not be 100%. The reason being the person who achieves more & the cost of the work-life balance may not continue giving as much in the years to come...
As stated by Asha Mathew, Attn is one of the criterias of judging the performance....

hey all !!!!!!:icon4:
i don't find fault of attendance being one of the criterion for appraisal of the employee. But yes i agree to the fact that it is not the only criteria either. never forget the fact that the absentee of the employee for a day can have things on hold or rather decision taken would be at much slower pace or rather the effective link breaks. that is possible not just at managerial level but at ground level too.:icon5:
