Dear Sweta,
I conducted my field work as a part of my PhD research on the ready-made garments industry. The research focused on training and skill formation in the formal industrial sector. I found that the ready-made garments industry has slowly initiated some activity in training its workforce. An interesting finding is that this training is an outcome of ergonomic practices being introduced in both firms under study. HR managers share that constant recruitment, due to high attrition rates, adversely affects their productivity. Hence, they are resorting to training to increase employee tenure. They have started with some induction training, planning to provide training for managers and supervisors in soft skills. Additionally, they have sent a couple of employees for training in specific areas of their industry, such as foreign exchange regulations and buyers' meetings. They have also established a training module where they recruit fresh candidates and provide them with training in operating machines for about ten to fifteen days using a module developed for this purpose with training wages.
