Dear Friends,

I am attaching a PowerPoint presentation on Competency Mapping. I have used it for a training program in my organization just to give a brief overview of what competency is, competency mapping, how competencies are measured (i.e., behavior indicators), etc. I hope it will be useful for basic information on the topic.

If anything is missing, then please let me know. I am waiting for your replies, suggestions, and guidance.

Regards,
Shailendra

Hi Shailendra,

This is a really interesting and useful PowerPoint presentation. I am doing my PhD in the same area of competency mapping. My topic is "The role of competency in assessing the training needs in pharmaceutical companies." Could you provide some guidance on how I should proceed further with this topic? It is just the beginning of my research work. If you have any more relevant data for my topic, kindly forward it to my email address, tank_78_2000@yahoo.com.

Could you also recommend some reading material on the same?

Regards and thanks,

Very well-done presentation. The only thing I'd suggest is that you should put less material on each slide - only key points to serve as cues, not the entire text for the presenter to read out. Also, if you can add a few graphics, it would make it more interesting. Congratulations. Keep it up.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for the valuable idea. I created this presentation to provide a brief introduction to competency mapping for my team members who have not encountered this topic before.

It took me 1 and 1/2 hours to complete the presentation and answer questions. I will certainly make more improvements for better clarity.

Please continue to share your ideas and contributions.

Hi Shailendra,

Nice presentation. I am also in the Skills and Competency department. I want to know what other departments, apart from Training & Development, where we can use competencies and skills. Do we only use skills and competencies in identifying training needs? What are other activities that can fall under the Skills and Competencies department?

Let me know!

Thanks,
Geetika

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your support.

Dear Geetika,

We use competency mapping in our organization for the following purposes:

1. At the time of recruitment: Since we already mapped competencies of the left employee, as well as knowing the competencies required for a particular post, it is easy to identify the correct person.

2. At the time of Incentives: We can easily work out whether the person has fulfilled the competencies or not, or has tried to show behavior indicators for particular competencies, hence incentives can be given.

3. At the time of TNI: As you already mentioned, it is used for TNI.

4. At the time of increments: If exceptional performance is shown, which can trigger other employees also to implement/change behaviors/attitudes, it is an additional benefit for retention and creates a healthy competitive environment.

5. At the time of cultural programs: It is something different, and let me tell you that it is not used so often. But I am trying to get the concept at my organization. The concept is that if a person is showing a particular competency above a normal level, then we can ask the person about his experience, how he is able to do it, what problems he has faced during, etc.

I think this point can be useful in giving recognition if implemented at cultural programs or social meetings with employees.

If anyone has implemented this concept and is willing to implement it in their organization, just let me know the results.

I am also attaching the details of some basic competencies and their behavior indicators for your reference.

Regards,

Shailendra

Dear Sailendra,

Your presentation is rich in facts and information but lacks a presentable look and feel. For any standard presentation, use uniform fonts everywhere. Try to use less text and more diagrams to make it more interactive. Diagrams should be explanatory; they will engage your audience until the end.

Kasturi.... :D

Dear Kasturi,

Thank you for your feedback.

I have presented this data for people who have come across this subject for the first time. At this "simple" level of presentation, I conducted a training program of 3 hours. In my experience, a presentation needs to be tailored to the understanding of the audience, allowing for a smooth flow. Therefore, it does not matter how "BEST GRAPHICAL" your presentation is if it lacks communication skills, rendering it "WORTHLESS."

From my experience in the HR department and as a Training & Development facilitator, I have found that the most crucial aspect of any presentation is the verbal communication of the presenter, rather than relying solely on graphical representation.

Surprisingly, this presentation managed to keep people engaged until the end. (Feedback I received from the VP - Operations and 20 other employees) I am at a loss to understand how this happened, and I hope you can explain it to me.

Dear Shailendra,

This PPT is very interesting as it summarizes the definition of Competency and what is required for HR to conduct for Competency. By the way, do you have any material regarding competency dictionary?

Dear Shailender,

Thank you for the presentation; it was really nice. However, I need a little more help from your side. I am a summer trainee working on a project about competency analysis and would like to know about the broad skills required at the lower, middle, and higher levels of management.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could provide guidance on this matter. I am eagerly awaiting a positive response soon. You can reach me at .

Please assist me as I am a novice in this area.

Dear Shailendra,

Nice presentation. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Few suggestions:

- What is the objective behind making this presentation?
- PPT should always have a content slide (so the participant is aware of what to expect).
- Objective slide (what is the purpose of this PPT).
- Put less text on each slide.
- You can include graphics, pie-charts, diagrams (like triangles, squares, etc.) to illustrate points and make the slides more attractive.
- It seems more like bookish material. If this is organization-specific, you need to clarify what needs to be done, such as a process or a survey to understand the types/number of roles existing in the organization. Please note that apart from HR people, no one else will read the PPT, so be clear about your target audience. Top management is more interested in action points rather than theory.

Hope this helps you. Please share your views.

Dear Shailendra,

That was a good presentation. The content is very good. My suggestion is that you put less information on each slide and use more images and/or graphics. It would keep people more engaged with the presentation.

Wish you all the best.

Dear Shailendra,

Effort has been put into preparing this presentation. Here are my humble thoughts:

In the slide where you define "Competency as a tool," you capture the fundamentals. However, when you are defining categories of competencies, this becomes a bit vague. Then again, you have established a good demo of the types of competencies. The slide between the two can be enhanced a bit more to keep the fine matter put together. Contents are helpful.

Hi Friends who are interested in this topic can get more information from Businessballs free online learning for careers, work, management, business training, and education: find materials, articles, ideas, people, and providers for teaching, career training, self-help, ethical business education, and leadership; for personal. The competency maps cannot be generalized since many organizations have different categories of staff and different working styles; hence, performance measurement with a general map is not possible. But it can be discussed with top management about their expectations and outcomes, which shall be considered as the base of the same. Hope this will be useful.

I am also attaching one document (it is not mine, downloaded from the net) that serves the purpose of how to develop and map competencies for different categories.

What you have posted is a very good presentation. The distinction between Competency and Performance has been brought out very well. The subsequent postings from various members have recorded appreciation and also suggestions for improvement. Your interaction points also provide food for thought. Even though the thread is seven years old, the relevance will be evergreen.

Thanks for the post.
