Hi Vivek,
This is Ritu. I am pursuing my PGDBM with a specialization in HR. As part of this course, we are required to undergo a 2-month summer training with a company. I am currently undertaking it with ONGC Ahmedabad, however, I am facing challenges in finding an appropriate summer project.
Could you please suggest some summer project ideas?
Thank you.

Dear Ritu,
Why don't you take on a project on:
a. Training and Development Process in ONGC
b. Performance Management System
c. Reward and Recognition Process in ONGC
d. HR Practices in ONGC
e. Recruitment Process in ONGC
f. Grievance Handling Process in ONGC
Thanks,
Vivek

Hi Vivek,
Thanks, but I should tell you this thing—my first day at ONGC. Today was my first day of the summer project. It was an informal meeting with my guide, Mr. Deepak Mohan, which lasted about 1 hour. He spoke about every possible thing regarding ONGC Ahmedabad to dishearten and disappoint me in the name of 'ground realities.'
He explained that all HR activities of this organization are centralized, i.e., all the policies and decisions are made in the main office situated in Delhi. At the asset level, they only handle implementation work. The topic of 'recruitment coordination and performance appraisal,' which was earlier assigned to me, he said would not be possible to carry out in Ahmedabad. However, he mentioned that there are two kinds of projects—study-based and research-based.
In a study-based project, you actually work with the company, while in a research-based project, you collect primary data through questionnaires and secondary sources, listing your findings based on that.
He suggested I could do a research-based project here, focusing on the attitude of employees, etc. He also mentioned that I should come up with my own idea, and he would assist me in preparing the questionnaire and conducting the research.
I am absolutely clueless about which project to choose that would best suit me given all these constraints. Now, please help me by suggesting a project.
Madam, please suggest a project. I am looking forward to an early reply.
Thank you.

Dear Ritu,
First things first, don't get demotivated. Always remember that what we read in books is not always applicable at the ground level. Our studies, books, and learning materials serve as guidelines for us to evaluate things, work, and make changes.
Ask Deepak about the manual/policy, which will provide guidelines and forms. I completed my project at ONGC Dehradun where I worked on various aspects related to HR, trade unions, grievance processes, performance management systems, training and development, and recruitment processes. Unfortunately, I did not keep a copy of my work; otherwise, it could have been helpful to you.
You can also focus on trade unions. Prepare a questionnaire and meet with different trade union leaders and management to understand their functionality. Some questions to consider are:
- What is a trade union?
- How is it formed?
- How many trade unions are there in ONGC?
- Which ones are recognized?
- What are their functions?
- How do they affect management work?
- How do they affect workers?
- What problems do trade unions face?
- What problems do management face?
- What processes/steps are involved when a trade union decides to go on strike?
- What forms/formalities need to be completed to form a trade union?
Read the chapter on trade unions from your book; it will provide you with half of the information. Then, prepare a questionnaire and speak to trade union leaders. Ask them for any booklets or details they may have.
Feel free to contact me at
.
Thanks

Thanks, Vivek.
I have with me a book by Aswathapa. What other books and websites should I refer to? Actually, this is my first project with a company, and I don't know how to go about it.
Thanks for your guidance, which I think I will be needing in the future as well.

Hi Ritu,
Welcome to the family.
Well, as far as your project is concerned, you can also study employee dissatisfaction at ONGC Ahmedabad. You can prepare a questionnaire based on work culture, working environment, compensation, relationships with seniors/colleagues/subordinates, discipline, willingness to continue with the organization, reasons for leaving if not willing, and more. Include both open-ended and close-ended questions. Additionally, use gradings like very good, good, satisfactory, bad, etc. After conducting the sample survey, identify the most demotivating factors and address them systematically. Conclude with practical suggestions. This project will help you interact with people at different levels of the organizational hierarchy, a crucial aspect of HR work. Understanding their problems is essential for creating a comfortable work environment.
Hope this provides some assistance.

Amit Singh

Hi Amit,
Today, I have received an email from my project guide at college, and she has suggested the following project: to study the relationship between EQ and role efficacy. Can you help me with how I should proceed further and where I can find the questionnaires or the format for the same?

Hello Ritu,
I am a new member of this site and I am doing my summer project in ONGC. However, I am not getting an appropriate topic for the same. Can you please help me with what project would be good to do with ONGC Ahmedabad?
Thank you,
Ritu
When I was doing my MBA, one of my classmates was doing her summer training in ONGC, though not at Ahmedabad. Her topic was the "Role of HR in Six Sigma," where she had to evaluate the responsibilities of HR in each and every process of the organization where Six Sigma was implemented.
Hope this will be of some help to you.
