Dear HR Seniors,

I am working for an IT company with over 5 years of experience in administration. Occasionally, I assist with HR-related tasks, which has provided me with some knowledge and experience in the field. Currently, I am pursuing my MBA in HR and am looking to transition my career into a more professional and systematic path by joining the Human Resources team.

I would appreciate your suggestions on the best ways to make this career move and the steps I should take to progress in HR. I have also expressed my interest in shifting my career to our HR Director, but I have not received a positive response yet.

Thank you in advance for all of your valuable suggestions.

Hi Swetha,

You mentioned that you have 5 years of experience in administration. Could you please specify your roles, responsibilities, and the duties you have shared with HR for a clearer idea? This information will help guide you effectively.

Sari :)

Thank you, Sari.

HR experience:
Recruitment (Not until the end process, but sorting out resumes and processing for interviews)
Updating employee databases
Employee relations
Onboarding processes for all levels
Designing award certificates and organizing rewards as part of Employee Relations.

Admin experience:
Travel arrangements
Visa processing
Assisting directors with day-to-day activities
Managing Outlook for the directors
Event management.

I hope the above experience provides a brief overview of my background.

Hi Swetha,

Admin and HR are definitely interlinked, as you already have an idea about recruitments. Try and learn the whole recruitment cycle. Else, sourcing the profiles, try to check with the manager again if you can move laterally or be a helping hand to HR department so that you can be totally aware of HR activities. You will not be considered a fresher. Try to apply in small firms in a generalist role where most activities, including admin, are handled by HR.

You can get back to me for further queries at saritha_kota@yahoo.com. I shall guide you.

ALL THE BEST! 😊

Hi Swetha,

I am also looking to make a move from Admin to HR, but I haven't been successful yet. Anyway, this may not happen in your case since you are with the same organization and can potentially transition from Admin to HR. Also, stay in touch with Saritha; she will surely help you.

Thanks,
Tarun

156 views but only 3 responses. Request all the seniors to please help me in getting out of this problem. Now my company is not doing really well, and I am not sure if I would have a good scope. I need to shift as soon as possible for a new career.

Thanks, Swetha
