Dear Seniors, I have 4 years of experience in HR recruitment in the non-IT field. I actually started my career in recruitment to gain knowledge about other functions of HR, but unfortunately, I got stuck in recruitment. After my marriage, I took a gap of almost 2 years. Now, I am looking for a job in HR but not in the recruitment field. I am exploring HR functions such as training & development, generalist roles, payroll, etc., but I am not finding the right opportunity to begin with.

Seeking Advice on Transitioning to HR Operations

Please suggest how I can make an entry into HR operations.

Transitioning from Recruitment to Core HR Functions

I was also in the same situation three months ago. I started my career in recruitment and worked as a recruiter, team lead, and Business Development Manager—covering all areas under recruitment while working for a vendor.

When I felt it was getting boring, I decided to shift my profile. To do that, I took certification in core HR functions such as payroll, statutory, training, HR administration, and performance appraisal, which was helpful in pursuing the job I had been dreaming about.

There are many institutes that provide training in this sector, so I would recommend that to you. If you are unable to do so, I am attaching a document that covers all the areas briefly from an interview perspective, which might be helpful for you. However, mere reading may not provide you with the depth of knowledge that you can gain through certification.

There are two distinct roles in Human Resources. One deals with transactions—the day-to-day activities. I can call it working in the comfort zone. It is ideal to learn many subskills in HR such as Competency Mapping, Performance System, Training & Development, etc. These are called transformational roles. You can grow in stature over a period of time. After a few years, you need to change gears and learn a lot more available in Human Resources.

Best wishes
