Dear Vijay,

Kindly spend some time to understand a few things about confined spaces:

- What is a confined space?
- What is a permit-required confined space?
- What is a non-permit-required confined space?
- What are the hazards in confined spaces?
- Do all confined spaces have the same hazards?
- Are safety precautions required for all confined spaces the same, or do they differ?
- Can there be an explosive atmosphere in a confined space?
- In what type of atmosphere in a confined space can electricity be a cause of explosion?
- Why would you want to use electricity in a confined space?
- Why do we have to prohibit/restrict the use of electricity in some confined spaces?
- Can electricity produce sparks?
- Can you limit the generation of sparks from electricity in a confined space, and if so, will limiting the voltage help?
- By finding answers to such questions, you will understand the reasons for using reduced voltage in confined spaces where it is unavoidable.

Dear Vijay,

Various hazards associated with confined spaces include electrical shock due to a wet or moist surface. The chance of electrical shock is higher in high voltage situations, but when the voltage is lower, the risk of serious electrical shock decreases.

The use of a 24-volt light satisfies the purpose of illumination, similar to other voltage lighting. Additionally, according to Section 36A(a) of the Factories Act, 1948, no portable electric light or any other electric appliance with a voltage exceeding twenty-four volts should be used inside any chamber, tank, vat, pit, pipe, flue, or other confined space unless adequate safety devices are provided.

Thank you.
