Background Check and Employee Payment

I have two questions:

a) If an employee who has joined just one week ago has a negative background check (e.g., the previous company where he worked doesn't exist), and we terminate the employment immediately, should he be paid for the days he worked?

b) Ideally, when should the employment verification process start? After the employee joins or before joining?

Help will be appreciated.

Hi Payment can be witheld, but state the appropriate reason, addressing your second question, the verification must be done after the interview are done, but before joining the company.

Payment for Days Worked

Pay for the days worked. The payment is for performing work; you may terminate the employment, but you cannot take free work. The amount may work out to be very small compared to the company's goodwill. The employee is bad, not the organization. Extrapolating the same argument as yours, if the verification process had taken longer, say some months, then what?

Verification process should ideally being as soon as candidate conveys his acceptance and wants to join. He should be paid for the limited period he/she worked.
