Dear all,

I ran a small startup company for 5 years after completing my UG. I then pursued a 2-year PG study. Now, I am looking to join an MNC company. What should I include in my CV? My friends suggest that I should highlight my 5 years of work experience, but I lack any evidence for that period. Please share your suggestions.

Thank you

Dear Elabz,

After graduation, you show your position as "Self-employed" in your CV. Later, a two-year period is shown in Education Development.

For proof of your self-employment, you might have income tax returns or a license under the Shops and Establishment Act, Articles of Association, etc.

By the way, the question arises: why do you wish to do a job now? Why do you not wish to continue with your business? Five years is not an insignificant period. To run a business, you need to deal with customers, employees, vendors, service providers, and so on. You must have gained a wealth of experience. Why do you wish to abandon it now? Is it not advisable to combine your previous experience and newly acquired education and aim to do something better?

Working in an MNC would mean working under a boss and obeying his/her instructions. The kind of freedom you had earlier, you will not have in a job. A feeling might creep into your mind that "I could do a far better job than the boss." Therefore, doing a job would mean undergoing great mental realignment. Are you prepared for that? A fish that swam earlier in a river or remained in the sea freely has to get into an aquarium!

All the best!

Dear Dinesh,

Thanks for the reply. I still wish to do business or pursue a Ph.D., but my parents insist that I get a job so that they can look for a girl for me to marry. I have been trying, but I haven't had the opportunity to do a Ph.D. at a foreign university. I don't have any proof other than a current bank account in my company's name, with no tax or registration. I had mentally prepared myself for a job.

Should I mention self-employment in my CV? Will MNCs encourage people like me to work? The next problem is what should I quote as my CTC and required CTC. I know there are a lot of loopholes, but please help me sort this out.

Thanks again.
