Hi, in my company, we are going to provide safety shoes to all the laborers. In the past, we have observed that when we have provided any safety gear, laborers are not taking care of it properly. Hence, this time we have decided to provide them safety shoes by deducting half the cost of the shoes from their salary.

Is This Advisable?

Is there any law that states the company has to provide safety gear free of cost to employees? Kindly suggest.

I would suggest supplying the shoes for the first time free of cost. Also, fix the lifespan of the shoes (i.e., for six months or eight months). Thereafter, any new issuances of shoes (or any other items) should be deducted from the salary. However, after the expiration of the lifespan, new inventory is to be provided at the expense of the company.

Wearing safety shoes in the workplace is very important, especially when it comes to health and safety hazards. To ensure the safety of employees, appropriate protective footwear must be worn by all individuals when working in areas where there is a risk of foot injuries due to falling objects.

Dear Robinson, Safety equipment or PPE should be provided by the employer. It is the responsibility of the employer to maintain safety norms in the factory as it is mandatory and also protects employees from injury and lawsuits. Regarding the same, you can talk to your top management. I would suggest deducting some amount once a year from their CTC; the rest can be covered under employee safety and welfare.
