Yes, the Chennai Corporation has introduced changes to PT rates -- as per the PDF file you have attached -- with retrospective effect (from October last year). Companies need to remit PT arrears for Oct 08 to Mar 09 along with the Apr 09 to Sep 09 revised PT amounts.

We checked with the PRO of Chennai Corporation and were informed that resigned employees can be excluded for PT arrear calculation. This is because PT is a "deduct and remit" tax, and PT cannot be deducted for resigned employees.

Please note that we do not have this in writing from Chennai Corporation.

We are Design Consultants, and we want to know about Professional Tax. We have not registered for Professional Tax since we started the firm in 2010.

Procedure for Registration and Payment of Arrears

What is the procedure for registration for Professional Tax and the payment of arrears (due)? Is it necessary to pay for the resigned employees as well, or is it only for the present employees who are working? What is the penalty that has to be paid along with the Professional Tax? We were not aware of it, and we recently received a notice to pay the Professional Tax.

Penalties for Current Employees

If present employees have been working for a period of more than 3 years, what is the penalty that has to be paid for those employees?

We have had our Service Tax registration since 2010.

Concerns About Resigned Employees

Our major doubt is about the resigned employees since we didn't deduct any tax from the salary paid. There are a few employees who worked for less than 6 months. What has to be done in that case?

There is no proper information regarding Professional Tax anywhere. Please help us with the information and your suggestions.

Dear Sir,

I have one small doubt about Professional Tax. Please clarify. I have joined in a Government job in the Police department on 01.12.2015. After receiving my January 2016 salary, they debited Rs. 850 for Professional Tax. Is it eligible or not? I only received a government salary for 2 months. Please advise me via email.

Thank you.
