Hi, I received a job offer letter from a multinational company in Bangalore on Monday. My access card has also been issued. However, on Friday, when I arrived at the office, the HR informed me that "Your educational background verification has failed, so you are terminated."
I am confused as everything seemed to be in order. I have all the necessary proofs and documents, but the HR is refusing to listen to me. She is not answering my calls or replying to my emails. Without the access card, I am unable to enter the company premises.
Could someone please advise me on what steps to take in this situation?

May I suggest that, in the first instance, you write a polite letter to the Head of HR asking for feedback on the verification carried out by the company, as you are not aware of any issues. Secondly, get confirmation from the educational establishments that you attended, just in case there is something wrong. Finally, send the confirmations to the company and ask to be reinstated.
I hope the above helps.

Thank you, Harsh, for your reply. I already wrote a polite email to HR, but she did not respond. I sent around 3-4 emails but still did not receive any reply. I called her desk, but she directly said, "I do not want to talk with you; you are terminated now."
They did not send me any termination letter; it was only communicated orally. I have tried various ways to communicate my issue to HR, but they are not responding.
Can you suggest anything else?

The only course of action I can now suggest is that you write to the CEO in letter format, not email. Other than that, seek out new employment. No need to beat a dead horse! I wish you the best.

Dear Mr. Krish, I am an HR practitioner in core areas, including background check verification. I have been in this field for almost a decade. I shared my experience in conducting background verifications in this forum. You may go through my emails if you are interested. I have vetted both for and against many candidates for valid substance and actual feedback on their employment and educational history. No responsible HR person in any organization worth their salt will take termination action against any employees without a valid reason.
Understanding Background Verification Challenges
This forum may not be able to assist in a meaningful way because no one has a magic stick to know, examine, and determine the level of integrity and honesty of any profile or individual. Please introspect on your actual educational background and the details you provided to the company. Something might have gone wrong that you may not be able to share on this site. That's fine. You know only who you are and what your actual educational background is. If you are 100% clean, then please write to the company's top HR executive and seek an answer or response.
All the best. If you have erred in details or in the educational qualifications, please change them to the original ones with a determination that you will not do it again. It is better to come clean at a younger age rather than try to cover up. The world is small, and we are connected in one way or another.

It is unfortunate that your background check failed. This is something very serious, and if you are absolutely sure that your credentials are correct, then you can do the following.
Background check companies can always make an error. HR departments can also make errors, and even universities that are reporting on verification requests can make errors.
1. Reach out to any reputed background screening company of your choice and get a verification for your credentials.
2. Ask HR to provide you with proof of verification since they claim that it has failed. You have the right to this information since these are your own credentials.
3. If there is a difference in both results, and as claimed by you, your credentials are correct, then you can go to court and seek relief regarding this issue.
4. If otherwise, then remember that there can be criminal charges filed against you as well.
So, if you are absolutely sure, then you can proceed further as per your best judgment.
Good luck.

Addressing Workplace Challenges
This incident is laughable, and I feel bad for you. It seems you have joined a problematic organization where the HR personnel are unreasonable.
Dear, if they are questioning your educational documents, they are not directly accusing you. Indirectly, they are questioning your University. I would advise you to update your CV and consider joining another organization because, currently, you are working under conditions where you won't be able to perform well. This situation can cause tension and potentially lead to depression.
Also, keep all your follow-ups with your HOD and HR department in soft or hard copy as proof, so you can approach the labor court if they harass you. I would also like to add that it seems they want you to exit the company. If they were willing to retain your services, they would have suggested a resolution. So, it's better to leave them now and start your new job with a fresh and determined mind.
Best of luck!

As you have mentioned that they informed you orally only, and they are not ready to give you a proper response even after receiving emails from you, then consider that they have internal reasons not to hire you, for which you are not at all responsible. Generally, MNCs are very strict towards their policies, ethics, and processes. But apart from all this, I think it'll be better to try to look for another opportunity rather than wasting your valuable time.
Also, I would like to mention that for your satisfaction, you can contact any background verification company and obtain a verified certificate from them. But don't challenge that MNC because if I'm not wrong, they have the power to blacklist you (although I am not sure about this as I have merely heard it from the public).
In closing, I wish you all the very best for your better future.

Process for Background Checks
What would be the process for background checks? Is it only about calling the previous employer to verify whether the new employee has worked there, despite submitting credentials like bank statements, Form-16, etc.? I don't understand how people can just say something without providing any kind of proof.

I agree with the suggestions given by the members above. This case evidently shows how poor the employer's practices, work style, and processes are. Without proper background verification (if they have a "Background Verification System"), they should not have offered the appointment letter or hired any candidate.
If the employer found anything wrong with the provided educational details/documents by the candidate, or anything that failed authentication, they have the right to take action against the employee. They should supply the details to the employee/candidate professionally to set an example for others.
They should have issued you a Termination Letter, but they failed to do so, and they are wrong at this point.
Secondly, if you are not at fault (as Mr. Rangarajan mentioned, only you know your situation) and they have not issued a "Termination Letter" with necessary details and reasons, you must try to obtain it.
I suggest you write another letter to the HR Head/General Manager with complete details, enclosing the email communication and any other correspondence you have had. Request them to provide the details of what caused your termination. Also, mention the name of the personnel who attended your interview or finalized all the details. (Post it by registered AD)
Note: There is no need to write directly to the CEO or similar authority but to the HR Head/Manager only, as they are the right and concerned authority.
If they fail to reply to you, you must file an application to the local/regional Labour Commissioner/Inspector, sharing all the details and referring to the appointment letter offered to you by the employer, with a CC to your employer. You can also visit them personally with all the original educational documents and work details.
Lastly, do not lose hope and confidence but move ahead, as Mr. Sachin said above. This was not the only job you could have had, and you can find many good jobs. However, I would say that taking action against the employer or solving your problem, as suggested above, can be secondary because getting a good job is most important for you now, in my belief.
