I am working in an IT company and just joined as HR. I came to know that my company follows the sandwich leave policy. I just wanted to know whether the sandwich leaves are counted at the time of the festival. For instance, now, as Diwali is approaching, I wanted to inquire if my company is offering a holiday on 3rd, 4th, & 5th Nov. However, if any employee takes leave on 2nd and 6th of Nov, do I need to calculate it as 2 days leave or 5 days leave?

Please do help me regarding the same...

If there is a policy of sandwich leave that applies in your organization, then I feel that it should also be applicable during festivals. There is a very low chance of waiving off the policy during festivals. Your only option is to ask your HR team for a way out.

Understanding the Sandwich Leave Policy

For the sandwich leave policy, ideally, it will be 5 days leave from the 2nd to the 6th.

In the sandwich policy, we count from the start date to the end date of leave irrespective of the fact that there are weekly offs or pre-declared holidays.

I hope this clears your doubt.

If your company follows the sandwich leave policy, then 2 days of leave do not arise at all; it will be 5 days from the 2nd till the 6th, as Ms. Ankita has mentioned. Since you are in HR, you should know and understand all HR policies, as you are supposed to explain the company's policies to employees in other departments.

Accordig to my understanding, leaves can only be pre-fixed or suffixed. In sandwich policy, leaves counted for whole period. IN this case all 5 days.
