Hi All Professionals, I am working as an HR Manager and would like to pursue a PhD in HR. Can anybody suggest any good universities where I can continue my studies through distance education? I need to balance my work commitments as well, so daily attendance or on-site activities are not feasible for me.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

It is possible to do a Ph.D. on a part-time basis. It is not necessary to attend classes on a regular basis. In fact, I've just registered for a Ph.D. on a part-time basis.

If you could please indicate your email id or contact phone number, I will be in a position to help you better.

It would be highly appreciated and useful for all if you could share the information here instead of seeking an email ID or phone number for giving individual assistance.

Warm regards.

The best place to seek information is the UGC because they were the ones who put a halt to long-distance and off-campus M.Phil./Ph.D. programs. I attended a convocation ceremony at Mother Teresa Women's University in Madurai in January 2013. There, I met the Vice-Chancellor and Members of the Council who all confirmed that they will not be enrolling people for M.Phil./Ph.D. off-campus. Whatever it may be, please take the time to find out the details as this process takes time—at least 5 years to complete, and the expenditure is not going to be any less. Even conservative estimates, as happened in the case of my life partner who completed her Ph.D. three years ago, cost about Rs. 3.00 lakhs in an institution aided by UGC. Private institutions can be even more costly.

Kind regards

Dear All,

I am pursuing a Ph.D. in HR - Training and Development in the final semester, even though I registered in 2010. According to current UGC norms, rules, and regulations, "UGC IS NOT ALLOWING Ph.D. THROUGH DISTANCE LEARNING SINCE 2009." If any university offers a Ph.D. through distance mode without an Entrance Test, THE Ph.D. IS NOT VALID. EVEN IN THE FUTURE, IT MAY BE PROBLEMATIC, JUST LIKE THE CURRENT CMJ UNIVERSITY CASE IN SHILLONG. THEY AWARDED SO MANY Ph.D. DEGREES WITHOUT FULFILLING COMPLIANCE. You can read about this in the newspapers. Be very careful.

This is in response to a suggestion from Mr. Raj Kumar Hansdah.

To my knowledge, universities and institutions that offer Ph.D. programs provide them on a full-time and part-time basis. When research scholars pursue a Ph.D. on a part-time basis, they do not have to attend classes but need to stay in touch with their guides and submit reports periodically to the guides/institution. However, if they have not completed an M.Phil, they may need to take a course on Research Methodology and also undergo an examination in the subject.

Universities Offering Part-Time Ph.D. Programs

I am aware of the following universities where part-time Ph.D. programs are possible:

- SCSVMV University, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu
- National Law School, Bangalore

Thank you indeed for your reply. I am in Kolkata, West Bengal. From here, how can I register under the deemed universities where you are already accepted as a guide? Moreover, I want to pursue my PhD specifically in HR. Kindly suggest.

I second Mr. Ravi Shankar. It is possible, and there are many reputed universities providing distance Ph.D. programs. But before going further, I request you all to visit PHD, Research & Assignments - CiteHR Human Resource Management Community Knowledgebase and get all the required information by going through the discussions.
