Hi, could you please help me out? I'm a student of MBA 1st year, 2nd semester. I have to choose my electives. Since I'm from a commerce background, I wish to take Finance as a major. However, when it comes to selecting an option for a minor, I want to choose HR.
Many people at my college have told me that HR is not a good choice for either a major or a minor because there are limited job opportunities. So, what should I do? Is HR as a minor a good option for a student who chooses Finance as a major? I would appreciate your views on this matter.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
First, I would like to suggest that you choose an option that you like the most. From your email, I gathered that you are most interested in Finance. Therefore, I recommend selecting Finance as your major and HR as your minor. In any interview, it doesn't matter whether it is a minor or major; what truly matters is your knowledge.

Hi Shailug,
Do not take HR as a minor but consider marketing. The reason is that choosing HR as a minor would not help you get into the HR field as it requires vast knowledge that you cannot acquire by minoring in it. Your first choice of finance is quite good, and having marketing as a minor would benefit you greatly. Both options would be open to you. If finance does not work out, you can pursue marketing. However, in the previous case, it was not possible to enter HR if it was only a minor. I have seen people who started their careers in finance transition to marketing, so it can also be beneficial in that way. The financial, or we can say banking sector, is always a booming sector, and this combination would lead you in the right direction. I hope you agree with my point.

Think about what you would like to do in the future. Opting for HR when you have a closer connection to finance might be a mistake. The job market will continue to change, so you shouldn't focus on how things are now when choosing a career path, or at least I wouldn't do it that way. Consider the pros and cons of each choice, give it a lot of thought, and make an educated decision. Good luck!
