Hello Everyone, I am planning to start an NGO on a really small scale basis. I want to register it officially, so I am looking for a name that has not already been registered. Our aim is to provide free food for the homeless people living on the streets in India.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,
Dr. Vinay Pitchika

Thanks, everyone, for the really nice suggestions. I am considering Mission Annapoorna at the moment but would also like to explore if anyone suggests something better. We are interested in engaging in other social activities besides feeding homeless people. Please feel free to share any ideas you may have. Thanks again. 

Vinay, it's good to see people stepping forward to do some good deeds. However, the name Annapoorna belongs to a group of famous hotels in Tamil Nadu. So, anything you do under that name, the credit will go to those groups. I suggest looking into other names and finalizing a few by taking votes, also checking the Registrar's website for any name registrations related to your choice.

First, I want to suggest that you please establish a vision, mission, and guiding principles for your NGO. These will guide you in the future to take more initiatives to achieve your vision and mission. Also, choose activities that have a greater impact on the life and living standards of your target people. These activities must elevate the living standards of the target people, and the ultimate goal should be to make it self-sustainable. This way, you can eventually transition out and work for more people or beneficiaries.

Secondly, conduct surveys to assess the needs of the people and the resources available. Determine how your experience and skills can be utilized in a better way to improve the situation.

Finally, while providing food to the street and homeless is a good start, it should not be the ultimate activity of your NGO.

P.S.: After defining the vision and mission, select a name that easily connects to these statements.

Some very good suggestions have been given by the group. However, I feel that you need to look at the bigger picture. People in need seek hope and someone to hold their hands. Accordingly, I suggest that you name your NGO as "Hope and Hold On."

All the best in your endeavor.

First, your objective is laudable, and may God's blessings be showered on the venture.

Name Suggestion: SADAK

The first name that stuck with me was SADAK - to denote street. Then I remembered that we usually bless people who give us food with "anna dhata sukhi bhava." So, combining these two, I thought SADAK could stand for Sukhi Anna Dhata Aahar Kendra. Does it sound okay?

It is good to see that you have set out on a noble mission which gels with your name. It is nice to see the response to your appeal in terms of many suggestions provided by fellow members. I do agree that the name you decide should be in sync with your Mission & Vision Statement. You may want to decide if it should appeal to just Indians or be broad-based. Offering a few suggestions below:

- Lighthouse
- SalveAge
- Samarpan
- Sanjog
- Jeevan Taara

My very best wishes for the success of your endeavor.

Thank you so much for the support. I never expected such a huge response. And yes, this venture will not have any political ambitions in the future whatsoever.

I really liked the AMMA concept, but it will be very closely symbolized as Ms. Jayalalitha's venture in Tamil Nadu. I will be starting it in Chennai, so I would not go with this name.

Other good options I noticed are SADAK, Lighthouse, SalveAge. I will share these with my friends and will decide upon a name.

I thank once again all the people who gave me ideas.

Vinay

It is good to hear that people like you are emerging to do social work. I also agree with what Mr. Parm and Mr. Jatinder have said. A name can be coined as vision and mission statements are ready. The name "AMMA" could be suited to your plan.

As I am working in an NGO, feel free to contact me to avail more ideas. My number is [Phone Number Removed For Privacy Reasons].

Thank you.

It is a very good thought to start an NGO with a view to providing free food to homeless people. However, I have a different opinion. Why don't you plan to rehabilitate such homeless persons and make them capable of standing on their own feet and earning their bread and butter? Even if you choose to distribute free food, the name you give to your organization is not as important as the actual work you do. Your work should be substantial and impactful.

With best wishes,
