Professional Tax Inquiry

Please let me know about professional tax. Is professional tax necessary to show in a salary breakup? What is the professional tax slab in metros, and how is it calculated according to salary?

Dear All,
Our company is engaged in contract work and provides manpower in different states (in small numbers), and we also have our office in Bangalore. We used to pay professional tax in Karnataka for the employees working in Bangalore. Now, around 5-6 employees are working in Mumbai.

Can anybody let me know whether we have to take separate PT registration in Mumbai to pay PT there or whether we can pay in Bangalore as per Karnataka government rules?

Professional Tax Deduction Guidelines

PT is to be deducted as per the rules of the state where the employee is actually working or posted, and not as per the rules of the state where the head office is located or where payroll is processed.

You have to take PT registration of Maharashtra.

• Not sure whether you have any office in Mumbai. In case you do not have an office in Mumbai, then you are spared from PT compliance in Mumbai. You need to have an office to register under P Tax.

• I believe you are paying salaries to your Mumbai employees from Bangalore. In that case, you will have to pay their P Tax in Bangalore unless you remove their names from your Bangalore/Karnataka payroll and show them under a separate pay register for Mumbai.

I have some queries related to PT. We are going to open an office in Bangalore shortly. I don't know anything about PT compliance, how to file, or what the contributions are. Please, can anyone provide me with all the details from scratch till filing? Including how to register and what needs to be provided from the employer's side. We are in the IT industry.
