Hi, Deepthi,
Before engaging in any welfare activities, you must check whether they fall under company expenses and ensure they do not become a burden.
Some of the welfare activities you may organize are as follows:
- Birthday Celebration with cake cutting: You can celebrate birthdays on the last weekend of each month for those whose birthdays fall within that month. Arrange a large cake according to the number of employees.
- Employee of the Month: During the birthday celebration, you can also acknowledge the Employee of the Month based on their performance in that specific month.
- Arrange training programs for personality development, sales skill enhancement, and communication classes.
- Celebrate Friendship Day.
Additionally, if your employees do not have health coverage, you can encourage them to enroll in medical facilities offered by various insurance companies at a low premium. The company may also provide assistance in this regard.

Amit Seth.

Hi,
Thank you, Mr. Amit Seth, for your reply. What I was searching for is information on employee welfare activities. I am currently pursuing my MS in HR, and we have been discussing the topic of employee welfare activities. I have browsed through search engines, but there is not adequate information available. Therefore, I have to focus on Hindustan Petroleum Corporation of India (HPCL). Unfortunately, there is no information on the HPCL website either. It would be greatly appreciated if you could provide some information on this topic.

As a person who has been working in a large heavy chemical manufacturing Private Sector Organization in South Tamil Nadu for 28 years, Deepti, Indian workmen view welfare as below:
- Subsidized canteen facilities
- Entertainment (including sports & games)
- Medical facilities for the self and family (nowadays group insurance plays a vital role instead of Medical facilities at the factory premises itself)
- Educational aids to the wards of the workmen
- Transportation facilities (not necessarily company bus facility - even TA will do)
- Interest-free loan facilities or low-interest loans
- Freebies during festivals and/or Founder's Day etc.
I have furnished the above in priority according to my experience with the Trade Unions for years together. Of course, my friend, it all depends upon the size of the Company, the number of workmen, and funds allotted to labor welfare. All the best.

Dear Ram,
Can you explain "Interest-free loan facilities or low-interest loans"? I have been given the task of finding out the cost to the company for providing this facility vs. the advantage. How can I sell this idea to the management? Can you please help me?

Providing free or subsidized meals should be a thing of the past. Nowadays, obesity in youth, especially among those who spend most of their time sitting at desks and using PCs or laptops, is on the rise. "Employees' Welfare" in its true sense would involve planning on how to make them more energetic and youthful day by day.
In this context, I suggest organizing or setting up a gym or a swimming pool in your workplace, equipped with a suitable trainer. Additionally, consider making certain hours of training or workout compulsory, even if it means shortening lunch or tea breaks. This initiative would significantly contribute to creating a healthier generation. While it may incur a slightly higher cost than your current budget, in the long run, if spread out, it would balance out. It goes without saying that other events like get-togethers, outings, picnics, sports days, etc., should already be part of the program.
