You might want to start by setting yourself some goals and planning the activities that are expected to be executed by the HR department within your enterprise. Perform a search across the site for HR functions. Equip your company and yourself with some policies and then proceed to work with the Finance Department on payroll. There are many functions that you can execute in your enterprise to kick-start. It should be both a learning stint for you to kick-start a new department as well as show you a deep learning curve for you in the enterprise that you are now associated with. Consider it as an opportunity rather than as a threat. You will receive professional help on forums. However, I would advise that you find an executive sponsor and try explaining beforehand what you wanted to do with the department and whether you will need any additional help from the senior and executive team members. Good luck with the same!

Hi there,

To start a new department, you can follow the basic steps outlined below:

1) Decide on the various functions in HR for which you want to hire. For example, based on the employee strength, you can allocate one person for recruitment, onboarding, and employee relations. I recommend assigning one employee for statutory and payroll tasks.

2) Once you have determined the roles, please define the job descriptions for each position. It is crucial to clearly outline the responsibilities and roles to minimize ambiguity.

3) Develop a vision and mission for the HR department that aligns with the organization's mission.

4) Broadly, in an employee's life cycle, you will encounter activities such as recruitment, induction, assessment, development, retention, and exit. Develop processes for each of these activities based on these key stages.

Remember, it is always beneficial to follow documented procedures to ensure consistency.

The possibilities are endless. If you need any assistance, please feel free to email me at ruchikas.sharma@gmail.com.

Best of luck! Ruchika

You can start by framing HR policies such as working hours, working conditions, leave rules, etc. Then, try to establish rules and regulations for your company. You can also discuss with your senior colleagues for their suggestions and ideas to frame these policies.
