Dear Seniors, please help me. I am seeking help for my younger brother. He is very good in his studies. Right now, he is pursuing his BE (Computer Science) from VTU. He is in the 8th semester, and his degree is about to be completed in May 2011, but he still hasn't secured a placement. He has excelled academically, being the topper of his branch four times, and maintaining a percentage of up to 72% until the 7th semester.
Due to the lack of college placements at his institution, he is becoming increasingly frustrated day by day. I kindly request your assistance in helping him secure interview opportunities. If given the chance, he will certainly prove his capabilities.

Dear Sir, even the condition is so bad that it's very tough to get interview calls from companies like TCS, WIPRO, and INFOSYS – big MNCs. Why do they focus only on campus placements? They can find ample talent outside the campus as well. If someone does not have references, then it should not be assumed that their studies are worthless.

Please tell your brother that he is not the only one facing this problem. There are many like him who have already faced and resolved it, and so will he. Please connect him with every job opportunity that you find on this board. There are many jobs posted for freshers. It's no big deal to land one. A premium league is a dream for every student, and there is nothing wrong with it. Ask him to target it right. He may choose to join a company as soon as possible and then gradually work his way up.
Do keep the options open for start-ups as well. The point being, he will get the maximum amount of exposure in start-ups. He may not have a flashy brand, but the learning he will gain is beyond what he can gain in any other role.
Guide him to stay focused on learning in his early years. This will take him a long way later on.

Advise your brother not to let his courage falter. He has not yet completed his bachelor's, and if he is frustrated at this moment, then what about people who graduated 7 years ago? There were no campus placements at that time. Life has become much easier for many freshers nowadays, with these campuses in place.
Help him understand what life is. There are a lot more challenges he will have to face once he is out of college. Many of us still think about our college life, as that was the period when we had minimal responsibility compared to the present.

Job Search Challenges and Coping Strategies
I know of a person who was the Vice President of Global Strategy in the USA, who has been out of a job for the past 18 months. Over forty years ago, it took months to land my first job even after obtaining a degree from IISc. When I emigrated to the UK in 1962, I had friends who were unemployed for 9 months. Even today, in the UK, it can take months for a fresher to secure a job. Becoming frustrated and dejected is not the way to approach this situation. To keep him engaged, suggest that he do some voluntary work; our daughter has worked for charities.

Dear Shweta, If he has done well in his academic career, then he will definitely get interview calls. Ask him not to worry about placement. Just tell him to concentrate on "where he is lacking," as that is more important. Getting frustrated is not an ultimate solution for any problem. Suggest that he relocate to another city like Pune or Bangalore, where he will get more opportunities and more interview calls. There are many candidates who might not have gotten a job through campus selection, but other resources helped them secure a better job. Keep trying and keep searching.
