One casual employee joined one month back. We deducted PF & EDLi and paid to the authorities from the date of joining. Today, just after the completion of 2 months, he met with an accident in the factory and died. His wage is Rs. 4000/- per month. We have only paid Rs. 800/- towards PF. Am I eligible for Rs. 60,000/- towards EDLI insurance from the PF office?

Even though a single contribution didn't pay, a claim for EDLI exists. If he has enrolled in EPF/EDLI by filling Form-5 and has worked for just one day, he is eligible to get compensation from EDLI, provided the employer is prompt and regular in their remittances.

Dear Sridhar,
As per my knowledge, if an employee dies during employment, his nominee or family member receives an amount equal to the average balance in the PF account of the deceased employee during the last 12 months. If such balance is more than Rs. 35,000, the insurance amount payable is Rs. 35,000 plus 25% of the excess amount over Rs. 35,000, subject to an overall limit of Rs. 60,000. (Recently, the government has made some changes in this regard. Kindly find the attachment.)
If the employees are covered under another life insurance scheme with benefits superior to this scheme, an exemption from this scheme can be obtained.
For recent changes, please find the attached document.

Dear Friends,
Please help with the following points as well.
One of my colleagues joined us recently, six months ago. His previously deposited PF and pension fund have not been transferred to our existing account. Unfortunately, he passed away three months ago. In such a situation, what EDLI benefits will be provided by the insurance machinery?
Your suggestions are highly required.

To calculate EDLI benefits, two things are required:
1. Average deposit in PF for the last twelve months.
2. Average deposit in PF for total service.
Please provide the above data so that I can inform you of the amount of EDLI benefit.

Please let me know the EDLI claim amount in the case below. The employee's salary is Rs. 4000 per month (Basic + DA), and the gross salary is Rs. 6200 per month. The date of joining the scheme was 17/03/2011, and the date of death was 18/05/2011. The employee is covered under EPF and EDLI only, not under LIC. The death was natural.
