Hi everyone,

Please tell me about the leave rules. As per government regulations, how many CL, PL, and SL days are employees entitled to? How does one take leave? For instance, how many days of CL can be taken continuously? How about PL and SL? At the end of the year, which leaves expire, and which ones can be carried forward to the next year? Do CL, PL, and SL leaves combine, or are they separate? For example, can one apply for a total of 5 days leave, including 2 days of CL, 1 day of PL, and 2 days of SL? Is this scenario feasible?

Please provide me with comprehensive information on this matter.

Regards,
Mahesh

Dear Mahesh ji,

As per Government of India leave rules, casual leave cannot be prefixed or suffixed to earned leave (privilege leave), sick leave, leave without pay (extraordinary leave), maternity/paternity leave, etc. Casual leave is granted for a maximum of 8 days in a calendar year and it lapses at the end of the calendar year. It cannot be carried forward generally. In some offices in remote places where casual leave cannot be granted for administrative reasons, the competent authority accepts the leave application, regrets with due remarks, and allows the employee to take leave subsequently in the next year so that the employee does not have to lose much. However, such practice has no legal sanctity. It is in existence for administrative convenience in far-off offices or hospitals, schools, etc.

Earned leave can be accumulated up to 300 days. Beyond this limit, it lapses if not availed of within the next six months.

Half-pay leave can be accumulated without any limit. It lapses only on retirement or death if it exceeds the encashment limit. A government employee is entitled to encashment of a maximum of 300 EL or EL+HPL.

EL, HPL, HPL commuted to full pay leave, extraordinary leave, maternity/paternity leave can be combined with each other. Special casual leave can also be combined with this leave. But not the casual leave.

Special casual leave can be combined with casual leave provided it is not combined with other types of leave specified above.

Hi,

Please tell me, how many leaves an employee may have in a calendar year? This includes CL's, SL's, EL's, and HEL's. Also, are these leaves carry forwarded to the following year?

Thank you.

Sree, Leave rules are based on the relevant Acts in which your company is covered. Companies can enact their own leave policies but not less than the leaves precribed in the applicable Act. Pon

Hi Friends,

In general, CLs (Casual Leaves) are 12 in a calendar year. ELs (Earned Leaves) are for those who have completed 240 working days during the calendar year. Employees meeting this criteria can avail 1 leave for every 20 days. Leaves can be carried forward, or if not used, employees can opt for a cash benefit.
