Hi Amit,
The People Capability Maturity Model (People CMM) is a framework that helps organizations successfully address their critical people issues. Based on the best current practices in fields such as human resources, knowledge management, and organizational development, the People CMM guides organizations in improving their processes for managing and developing their workforces. The People CMM helps organizations characterize the maturity of their workforce practices, establish a program of continuous workforce development, set priorities for improvement actions, integrate workforce development with process improvement, and establish a culture of excellence.
Before implementing this, you should read the literature available on http://www.sei.cmu.edu/cmm-p/.
Primarily, this has been implemented by major IT companies in India and is gaining momentum.
Some time back, I had attended a workshop on P-CMM by L&T, and they have the expertise in the implementation of this and do help corporates. I don't remember the names of trainers now. What you can do is go to the L&T site, and I am sure there would be some reference to that, and in case I get the visiting cards, I shall forward you the same.
Good Luck!

Hi Durga,
"Is PCMM applicable only to knowledge-driven organizations like IT?"
Till now, most of the knowledge-driven companies have implemented the PCMM as it requires making HR practices system-driven rather than people-driven to develop people. It requires a lot of time, commitment from the management, employees, and resources... maybe that's the reason it's been limited to IT companies. Yet to come across non-IT firms that are implementing the PCMM! Some of the initiatives can surely be implemented...

Hi All,
People CMM is a conceptual framework, a state-of-the-art model of the best HR practices across the profession. It is a reference model to implement and institutionalize the best HR practices in an organization. However, it is to be noted that it has to be an organizational initiative and not just an HR initiative.
I was lucky to be a part of history. I was involved in the implementation of PCMM in a non-IT company at Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd. (MHRIL), well known as Club Mahindra, which is the first non-IT company in the world to be successfully assessed at level III of the model.
For a conceptual understanding, please visit the site www.sei.cmu.edu and go through the PCMM section. The entire model literature is available for free download in Acrobat format.
For more clarifications, please feel free to email me.
Cheers, Kanishka

P-CMM is applicable to any organization - it will have the greatest impact in an organization where you need to manage the competencies and processes of the organization. Which is just about any organization.
Check back issues of Economic Times from last year (I don't have the issue at hand) to read about how Club Mahindra in Goa has used P-CMM and been appraised at Level 3 in their initial appraisal.

Hi,
I agree that PCMM is not applicable only to software organizations, but they did take the lead, and it also came from SEI, which had developed CMM/CMMI for software companies. My experience indicates that some BPO organizations have implemented or are at various stages of looking at implementation. Club Mahindra has already done this. As organizations are realizing the strength of the model, even other organizations are looking at implementing it.

Hi Kanishka,
I'm sure it would have been an experience of a lifetime to be involved in the implementation process of PCMM in a non-IT setup. Last week, I was at the National HR Summit in New Delhi, and we had a great discussion on the applicability of PCMM in Software versus Manufacturing and other industries.
We had a large group of eminent HR professionals from the IT industry who had implemented or were in the process of implementing PCMM.
I've worked on the PCMM implementation at WIPRO TECHNOLOGIES as part of the Executive Committee responsible for PCMM implementation. It was a great experience because getting a chance to work on a project like this as a Trainee while it is still new in the market is rare.
Now, I am with a renowned global manufacturing concern and have always been thinking if we can use PCMM here as well. But, I have been too tied up to actually put it into practice. It would be great if you could share your experience - how did the whole process take off, what were the starting points, who all were involved, how long it took, how did you institutionalize the process, what difficulties were faced, etc. I know it's challenging to write all this, so it would be great if you could send me your contact number. Please send it to
.
Looking forward to talking to you.

Dear Sir,
I am currently working in the HR department of a prominent manufacturing sector organization. I am keen on understanding the process of implementing PCMM in this sector and the potential challenges one might encounter during its implementation. I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide some insights into this area.
Thank you.
Aditya

Hi Kanishka,
I must say your experience in the PCMM project sounds very exciting to me. I am all the more charged up because very soon I am going to be a part of the same at my company. However, I hardly have any experience or detailed knowledge on it. Therefore, I want to soak up as much information as I can so that I'm well informed about the subject. I am collecting reading material on it, but there are certain limitations when you are implementing it.
I would appreciate it if you could share your experience on the same and email me the presentations or any material that you have on PCMM at vansh21@gmail.com. It would really be very helpful to me.
Many thanks,
Vansh
